The Big Ten’s 2026-27 hockey calendar is set, and Michigan State’s path through the season is now laid out from the first exhibition to the final league series in March.
The conference released its full schedule Friday afternoon, with game times and television assignments still to come. For the Spartans, the league slate is built around a familiar format: four meetings with each of the other six Big Ten teams, split evenly between home and road. That gives MSU 18 home games in all at Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena, including two exhibitions.
Michigan State’s season starts with a high-profile exhibition against Boston College on October 2. The real thing begins the following weekend, when the Spartans host Northern Michigan on October 9 and 11 to open the regular season with a homecoming weekend series.
October then turns into a grind on the road. MSU plays four straight away from East Lansing to close the month, beginning with RIT in Rochester, N.Y., for Brick City Homecoming weekend at Blue Cross Arena on October 17. The Spartans then head back to the East Coast for a two-game set at New Hampshire on October 23-24 before wrapping up the stretch with the Hockey Hall of Fame Game against North Dakota in Austin, Texas on October 31.
The non-conference schedule keeps rolling into November, when Michigan State returns home for the second half of its home-and-home series with Boston University on November 6-7. Big Ten play starts soon after with a trip to Notre Dame on November 12-13.
One of the season’s biggest intrastate matchups arrives next. Michigan State and Michigan split their first series on November 20 and 21, with Friday’s game in Ann Arbor and Saturday’s contest back at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans stay in conference play after that, traveling to Ohio State on December 3-4 before hosting Minnesota on December 11-12.
MSU will again be part of the Great Lakes Invitational, which celebrates its 60th edition in 2026. The Spartans enter as the defending champions after winning the 2024 and 2025 GLI, and they’ll try to hold onto the title against potential opponents Michigan Tech, Lindenwood and Western Michigan on December 29-30. The non-conference portion of the schedule closes with an exhibition against the US National Team Development Program team at Munn on January 3.
January brings another heavy run of Big Ten games, starting with a road series at Wisconsin on January 8-9. Penn State visits East Lansing on January 15-16, and the month ends with another trip to Minnesota on January 29-30.
The Spartans also pick up the extra home game against Michigan this season. They host the Wolverines at Munn on February 5, with a road game at a location to be determined the next day on February 6.
Michigan State’s final stretch is front-loaded with home ice. Three of its last four Big Ten series will be played in East Lansing, with Wisconsin coming in on February 12-13, Notre Dame on February 25 & 27, and Ohio State on March 4-5. Penn State is the lone road series left in the league schedule, set for February 19-20.

Michigan State added an early jolt to its future backcourt when Antonio Pemberton, one of the top point guards in the 2027 class, committed to the Spartans. After visits and an extended recruiting chase, he picked Michigan State over several other programs, giving Tom Izzo and his staff a highly regarded guard to build around well before the rest of the class has fully taken shape.
Pemberton arrives with a reputation that already has plenty of people around the recruiting world talking. He has been praised for his scoring ability and competitiveness, and the level of interest around him showed it, with more than 30 Division I offers on the table. Michigan State Brings A Familiar Home Test Back At The Right Time
Michigan State is set to welcome a familiar test back to East Lansing this weekend, as the womens golf team hosts the 41st Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course beginning Sunday. The annual event brings together 15 teams and gives the Spartans a chance to measure themselves at home in a format that will ask for a lot right away, with 36 holes on the opening day before the final 18 on Monday.
