Michigan State and Michigan meet under the lights at the Big House with both programs carrying plenty of baggage into one of college football’s most heated rivalry games.
The Spartans come in on a six-game skid after opening the Pat Fitzgerald era with two wins, and the losses have piled up in conference play. Michigan State is 0-5 in the league, but the bigger story has been the injury list that has stripped the roster down and forced the Spartans to keep piecing together a lineup week after week.
Michigan’s season has had its own rough edges. The Wolverines started 3-0, though one of those wins is still up for debate as to whether Michigan actually won or not.
Since then, they’ve dropped three of their last five, and the Bryce Underwood experiment may have gone on long enough. Underwood was benched a game and a half ago, and Tommy Carr has looked more competent since taking over.
This matchup has belonged to Michigan lately, with the Wolverines winning the last four meetings. Even so, the past two games were tighter than many people might remember, with Jonathan Smith having Michigan State ready to compete both times without getting the result. Now it’s Fitzgerald’s turn to try to get the Spartans fired up for their biggest rivalry game of the season.
The emotion around this one is part of the draw. These teams do not need much help bringing edge, and the trash talk between the schools is as relentless as ever.
The late kickoff only adds to the atmosphere, giving everyone plenty of time to get worked up before the first snap. Hopefully it stays a football fight and not anything else, because when these two get together, you never quite know.
For Michigan State, the stakes are obvious. A win would give the Spartans their first conference victory under Fitzgerald and might be the moment that finally gets the season moving in the right direction.
There were a couple of near-breakthroughs before the latest setback. Michigan State lost on the final play against Illinois in overtime after failing to convert a two-point attempt.
The next week, the Spartans were again one play away, only to have a field goal blocked with a minute left. That opened the door for then-No.
25 Northwestern to march down the field and hit the game-winner.
That loss also extended the injury trouble. Starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic was too shaken up to play the following week, which pushed freshman Kayd Coffman into the lineup against a top-10 UCLA team. Without Milivojevic, Michigan State slipped back into the same form it showed against Nebraska and Wisconsin.
If Milivojevic can make it back, the Spartans may be able to offer more resistance than they have all season, maybe even more than they did against Northwestern.

Michigan State Heads Into Michigan With One Huge Question On Offense
The buildup to Michigan States trip to Ann Arbor has centered on the same place rivalry games often do, right in the trenches. Offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan has stressed that the Spartans need more effort and physicality, and graduate center Trent Fraley echoed the point by putting the focus on controlling the line of scrimmage and leaning into the rushing battle, a familiar formula in this matchup.
The bigger issue is still under center, where Michigan State is waiting on clarity around sophomore Alessio Milivojevics injury status. If he cannot go, true freshman Kayd Coffman could be asked to make the start in one of the most demanding environments in college football, adding another layer of pressure to an offense already being measured by how well it can hold up at the point of attack. Michigan State Sent An Early Message Before Duke
Michigan State wasted no time making its point in the opener, rolling past Quinnipiac 96-59 and looking every bit like a team that expects to be part of the early national conversation. The Spartans spread the scoring around, put six players in double figures and shot it well enough to keep the game from ever feeling competitive, a sharp first step for a group trying to establish its identity before the schedule tightens.
For a team with Duke looming, the bigger takeaway was not just the margin but the way Michigan State handled the night with balance and control. Individual performances were still being sorted through afterward, with some players drawing praise for what they brought and others leaving room to clean things up, but the overall message was clear: the Spartans arrived ready to play, and the next test will say even more.
