Michigan State’s annual Grind Week is doing what it so often does for Tom Izzo’s program: turning a football weekend into a basketball recruiting stage.
With Michigan State football set to host Eastern Michigan, the Spartans are also bringing in two major 2027 targets - guard Antonio Pemberton and center Jaydn Jenkins - for visits that line up with the longtime campus tradition. Izzo’s former-player-heavy weekend has become a reliable recruiting draw, and the staff is hoping this year’s version gives them another push with two of the class’s top prospects.
Pemberton is the bigger-name headliner right now. The 6-foot-1 guard from Hanover, Massachusetts, who plays at Master’s Academy International, is ranked No. 23 overall and No. 5 among point guards in the 2027 class by the 247Sports Composite. Michigan State’s staff clearly isn’t guessing here; their evaluation matches the public ranking, and they were especially impressed with his summer-circuit play, which helped line up this visit with Grind Week.
His recruitment has already been narrowed to eight schools, with Michigan State still in the mix alongside Ohio State, UCLA, Tennessee, Kansas, Creighton, Boston College, and Marquette. The Spartans remain one of three Big Ten programs still standing.
Pemberton’s trip to East Lansing runs from Friday the 11th through Sunday the 13th, and it comes after visits to Tennessee, Kansas, and Creighton. He still has five more scheduled visits ahead.
Michigan State offered him on July 12, and the staff has been moving quickly to build a relationship over the last couple of months. On the board at guard, the Spartans are also tracking Jaxson Davis and Aaron Britt Jr.
Jenkins brings a different kind of profile to the table. The 6-foot-10, 220-pound center from Warminster, Pennsylvania, and Archbishop Wood is rated an 88 by 247Sports Composite and sits at No. 42 overall and No. 6 at his position in the 2027 class.
He’s also the top-ranked prospect in Pennsylvania. His final five includes Michigan State, NC State, Georgetown, Xavier, and Ohio State.
There’s already been some movement in his schedule. Jenkins canceled an upcoming visit to NC State, but he still has a trip to Ohio State lined up after his stop in East Lansing.
So far, he’s been to Xavier and Pitt. Michigan State offered him in late June and has made a strong impression in a short time.
Another name to know in the Spartans’ center pursuit is Kamsi Awaka.
For now, all eyes are on the visits and what kind of momentum Michigan State can create out of Grind Week.
