Michigan State football fans have a clear favorite when it comes to the best win over Michigan.
On the eve of the Nov. 7 night game in Ann Arbor, readers of the State Journal made their choice loud and clear in an online poll: the Oct. 17, 2015 “Trouble with the snap!” game stands alone at the top.
That finish is still hard to top. With 10 seconds left and Michigan ahead 23-21, Blake O’Neill fumbled the snap.
Jalen Watts-Jackson scooped up the loose ball in the air and took it back for a touchdown as time expired. TV cameras caught the stunned reaction from Michigan fans in the stands, and the Spartans walked away with a 27-23 win.
The 2015 game drew 69% of the votes, more than two-thirds of the total cast.
Far behind it, but still remembered fondly by MSU fans, was the Oct. 30, 2021 matchup. That one got about 12% of the vote, powered by Kenneth Walker III’s huge night. He scored five touchdowns, including the game-winner on a 23-yard run with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, and Michigan State held on for a 37-33 victory.
The Nov. 3, 2001 game finished next with nearly 7% of the vote. Michigan was ranked No. 6 and leading 24-20 when MSU started its final drive near the goal line.
With no timeouts left, the Spartans spiked the ball, and the clock appeared to stop on one second instead of running out. That gave Jeff Smoker one last snap, and he scrambled before throwing an off-balance pass that T.J.
Duckett caught for the winning touchdown. Michigan State won 26-24.
Another classic came in 1990, and it picked up just over 5% of the vote. Michigan entered that Oct. 13 meeting ranked No. 1 in the country despite a 3-1 record, then drove down and scored with six seconds left to cut the deficit to 28-27.
The Wolverines chose to go for two instead of kicking the tying extra point, and Desmond Howard got free behind MSU cornerback Eddie Brown. Brown tripped him, the pass bounced off Howard’s hands, and no penalty was called.
The unranked Spartans escaped with a 28-27 upset.
The Oct. 9, 1999 game received about 3.5% of the vote. Both teams were unbeaten and in the top 10, and Michigan State built a big lead behind quarterback Bill Burke and receiver Plaxico Burress.
Michigan then answered with two late touchdown drives after Tom Brady came off the bench. Brady did not start the game, but he nearly pulled the Wolverines all the way back before Nick Saban’s Spartans held on for a 34-31 win.
Rounding out the list was the Oct. 25, 2008 game, which got about 3% of the votes. That win came more than six years after Michigan State had last taken home the Paul Bunyan Trophy, and the Spartans still had not won in Ann Arbor since 1990.
Under Mark Dantonio, they broke through with a play-action touchdown pass from Brian Hoyer to fullback Josh Rouse. Hoyer and Blair White made big plays, and Javon Ringer carried the load with 194 yards on 37 carries, just days after tearing a knee ligament.

Michigan State Just Found A Way To Add Juice To Rivalry Week
Rivalry week usually brings its own kind of electricity, but this years Michigan State-Michigan matchup has been carrying a different tone. Both programs have been fighting through rough stretches, and Michigan State enters the 2026 meeting on a six-game losing streak with several key players unavailable, while Michigan is favored at home. The buildup has been quieter than usual, with the usual edge muted and the trash talk mostly absent.
Kyle Whittinghams recent comment downplaying the rivalrys significance only added to the odd feel around it, especially for a series that normally sells itself. Even so, games like this have a way of finding their own juice once the week gets moving, and Michigan State still has a chance to turn a subdued lead-up into something more compelling when the teams finally line up. Michigan State Just Got A Harsh Reminder Of What Elite Hockey Takes
Michigan State got a blunt lesson Friday night at Ron Mason Rink, where it controlled some of the numbers but not the game in a 6-2 loss to Boston University. The Spartans outshot the Terriers and won the face-off battle, yet still found themselves chasing the scoreboard as BU made its chances count, including on the power play.
Adam Nightingales team has reason to believe the process can look better than the result, but this was also a reminder that elite hockey punishes mistakes quickly and leaves little margin for missed opportunities. For Michigan State, the frustration is not just the defeat itself, but how much work remains before those territorial advantages start turning into the kind of wins that matter. [Read more 🡒]
Michigan Legend Just Added Fuel To Michigan State's Final Four Buzz
The Final Four chatter around Michigan State picked up another notch this week when Jalen Rose, a University of Michigan basketball legend, went on TNT and put the Spartans among his picks to make it to the sports biggest stage. Rose singled out the way Tom Izzo has his team playing and pointed to Jeremy Fears as part of the reason Michigan State has started to look more like a contender after the preseason uncertainty that surrounded the program.
It also adds another layer to the pressure already hanging over Izzo, with the Final Four set for Detroit and the Spartans trying to turn a strong start into something bigger. Rose filled out the rest of his bracket with Illinois, Florida and Duke, but for Michigan State fans, the notable part is simple enough: a Michigan icon just gave their team a public vote of confidence at exactly the right time.
