Spartans Surge Across Sports: Basketball Dominance, Hockey Climb, and a Record Gymnastics Crowd
Michigan State fans have plenty to cheer about this week, with momentum building across the board for the Spartans. From a statement win on the hardwood to a key sweep on the ice, and even a record-setting night in gymnastics, the Green and White are heating up in late January.
🔼 Terp Takedown: Spartans Roll to Sixth Straight Win
Let’s start with the headliner. No.
10 Michigan State men’s basketball put together a complete performance on Saturday at the Breslin Center, dismantling Maryland 91-48. That’s not just a win - that’s a statement.
The Spartans have now won six straight, improving to 18-2 overall and 8-1 in Big Ten play. And while the team effort was impressive, it was Jeremy Fears Jr. who stole the show.
The freshman guard dropped a game-high 17 points and dished out a career-best 17 assists - a mark that ties for the second-most in a single game in program history. That kind of distribution is rare air, and Fears looked every bit the floor general Tom Izzo needs for a deep March run.
The chemistry is clicking, the defense is locked in, and the offense? It’s humming. This team is starting to look like the real deal.
🔼 How Sweep It Is: Hockey Keeps Climbing
On the ice, the No. 2-ranked Spartans hockey team continues to build its case as a national contender. Michigan State completed its second consecutive Big Ten sweep over the weekend, this time against Minnesota, improving to 19-5 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
With the sweep, MSU pulls within just one point of first place in the Big Ten standings. That’s a big-time move in a conference that’s as deep and competitive as any in college hockey. The Spartans are playing with confidence, structure, and a level of consistency that travels well - and that’s exactly what you need down the stretch.
🔼 Gymnastics Shines in Front of Record Crowd
Michigan State gymnastics may have fallen short on the scoreboard, but they made history in front of nearly 10,000 fans at the Breslin Center - a program-record 9,887 to be exact.
Facing No. 5 UCLA, the No.
21 Spartans posted a season-high 196.900, narrowly falling 197.425-196.900 in a tightly contested meet. The performance topped their previous season-best by nearly seven-tenths of a point - a significant jump in a sport where every tenth matters.
The energy in the building was electric, and the Spartans fed off it. This team is trending up, and the atmosphere proves there’s a growing buzz around the program.
🔽 Wrestling Drops Road Match at Purdue
On the mat, Michigan State wrestling started strong but couldn’t hold off Purdue on Friday night. The Spartans jumped out to a 9-4 lead behind gritty wins from Kael Wisler (197 lbs), Josh Terrill (heavyweight), and Nick Corday (125 lbs), but the Boilermakers stormed back to take the dual, 27-9.
MSU will look to bounce back quickly, with a rescheduled matchup at Indiana set for today at 4 p.m. ET in Bloomington.
💚 One Big Thing: “The Cut” Continues to Pull Back the Curtain
Episode five of “The Cut,” presented by Rocket, gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the reigning Big Ten Champion Michigan State men’s basketball team.
This week’s episode features Director of Athletic Equipment Dave Pruder, who shares the history and evolution of MSU’s iconic jerseys. Freshman Jordan Scott also steps into the spotlight, reflecting on his growth under Coach Izzo and the team’s recent road success.
It’s a reminder that the Spartans’ success isn’t just about what happens on game day - it’s about the culture, the preparation, and the people behind the scenes who make it all go.
