Michigan Coach Just Reignited The Edge In This Rivalry

As Michigan's QB coach Koy Detmer reignites the fierce rivalry flame against Michigan State, head coach Kyle Whittingham's subdued approach faces scrutiny.

Michigan’s rivalry week message is coming from the right place, even if it’s not from the top of the staff.

Kyle Whittingham has spent the past week brushing off questions about Michigan State with the kind of polite, low-key approach that has left Michigan fans uneasy. But on a staff where the head coach has been careful with his words, Koy Detmer gave the blunt answer plenty of people around the rivalry wanted to hear.

Detmer, Michigan’s offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach, didn’t bother dressing it up when asked about Michigan vs. Michigan State. He said he wants to “beat the hell out of (MSU)”.

Michigan QB coach Koy Detmer on his approach to the Michigan State rivalry:

“Want to beat the hell out of them. … Slobber, snot, heavy breathing.

Bones cracking, bruises. That’s what this game is.”

That kind of edge matters in a series like this, especially when the head coach has been handling the matchup with a softer touch. Whittingham can keep things measured if he wants, but Detmer at least sounds like someone who understands what this game is supposed to feel like.

The contrast is part of the frustration. The source compares Whittingham’s approach to John Beilein’s old style of respectful rivalry talk, but notes that Beilein had earned that tone by winning enough and staying in the title picture. Whittingham, by comparison, has not done much in Ann Arbor beyond surviving one of the season’s biggest upsets thanks to a gifted extra second.

So if the head coach isn’t going to lean into the animosity, the quarterbacks coach will.

The rivalry itself has lost some of its bite, too. In the final stretch of the Mel Tucker era, the tension was high, but mostly because the toxicity had gotten out of hand. People wanted that dial turned down, but instead the whole thing got lazier rather than cleaner.

There is still plenty of dislike between Michigan and Michigan State, but the collapse of the Tucker era and the transition into the Smith era did damage on the Spartans’ side because the understanding of the rivalry slipped away. Now Michigan is feeling some of that same drift while Pat Fitzgerald is rebuilding the culture at Michigan State and bringing back the kind of understanding that defined the Mark Dantonio years.

The point, at least from this view, is simple: the rivalry needs more real heat again. Not the tunnel chaos.

Not the ugly stuff. Just the kind of edge that makes the game matter the way it should.

Detmer, at minimum, gets that part right.

Michigan State Hockey Brings Real Momentum Into A Huge Munn Showdown

Michigan State walked out of the 2026 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game with a result that did more than add another win to the ledger. Beating No. 8 North Dakota gave the Spartans a quality nonconference statement, and it came with contributions across the lineup, including Cayden Lindstrom and Anthony Romani, who helped drive the offense in a game that felt like a measuring stick for where this team stands right now.

Romanis night was strong enough to earn both B1G Second Star of the Week and Player of the Game honors, while Adam Nightingale also hit a notable coaching milestone by reaching 100 career wins faster than any coach in program history. With Michigan State sitting No. 3 nationally and carrying one of the highest numbers of NHL draft picks in college hockey this season, the bigger question now is how all of that translates when the Spartans get back to Munn for a showdown that should tell plenty about their ceiling. Michigan State Is One Win From The Final After Wild Finish

Bella Najera delivered the kind of finish that can swing a tournament, scoring in the 96th minute to lift Michigan State past Washington, 3-2, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The Spartans survived a back-and-forth match that featured a detailed scoring timeline and several key plays, then walked away with a dramatic win that keeps their postseason run moving forward.

Michigan State now heads to the semifinals for a meeting with Michigan, which gives the Spartans another high-stakes test in a rivalry setting. After a wild finish against Washington, the margin for error only gets smaller from here, and the next round will decide whether this late surge turns into something even bigger. [Read more 🡒]

Michigan State Needs More Than Tommy Carr To Survive This Rivalry

Tommy Carr is about to get another crash course in Big Ten football, and this one comes with the kind of pressure only a rivalry game can bring. The true freshman quarterback is preparing for his third career start for Michigan State after earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for his performance against Rutgers, a sign that the Spartans have at least found some stability on offense as they head into Saturday's trip to Michigan Stadium.

Michigan State will need more than Carr's poise to keep pace, though, especially with a defense that is dealing with multiple injuries. The Spartans are counting on that unit to make life difficult for a young quarterback on the other side, but the bigger question is whether Michigan State can hold up long enough to let its freshman signal-caller keep building on his early momentum in one of the season's most demanding settings.
