As the college basketball season wraps up, Michigan State's Jeremy Fears Jr. has solidified his status as a standout playmaker, leading the nation in both total assists and assists per game. It's no surprise that his exceptional performance has earned him a spot as one of the five finalists for the prestigious Bob Cousy Award, which honors the top point guard in college basketball. The award, first given to Saint Joseph's Jameer Nelson in 2004, has yet to be claimed by a Michigan State lead guard.
Fears finds himself in elite company, competing for the honor alongside Arizona's Jaden Bradley, Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr., Houston's Kingston Flemings, and Purdue's Braden Smith. The winner will be determined by a selection committee of media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers, with a fan vote also playing a role.
Hailing from Joliet, Illinois, Fears has emerged as a pivotal player for the Spartans, who posted a 25-6 record and secured third place in the Big Ten standings. Averaging 15.3 points and 9.1 assists per game, Fears has notched 281 total assists this season, the second-highest single-season tally in Michigan State history. As one of the four captains of the No. 8-ranked Spartans, he shines with a 4.13 assist-to-turnover ratio, ranking fourth nationally, and boasts an impressive 89.0% free-throw percentage, placing him fifth in the Big Ten.
Anticipation is high for Fears to be named a first-team All-Big Ten selection, with those honors set to be announced on Tuesday. He's also made it to the top 15 ballot for the prestigious Wooden Award.
"Jeremy has grown," said MSU head coach Tom Izzo. "He's done a lot, he's gotten a lot better, and he's grown.
His shot is a lot, lot better. He just keeps growing and he's gotta keep growing."
Looking ahead, Fears and the Spartans are gearing up for the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. As the 3-seed, they've earned a triple-bye into the quarterfinals, where they'll face either 14-seed Rutgers, 11-seed Minnesota, or 6-seed UCLA. The stage is set for Fears to continue his impressive run, and fans are eager to see what he delivers next.
