Days after going undrafted in the 2026 NBA Draft, Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler wasted no time getting back on the floor.
Kohler, who had to wait 48 hours to find out his name wasn’t called, soon got a call from the Utah Jazz. The team offered him an Exhibit 10 contract, which is essentially an invite to NBA Summer League. It wasn’t the draft outcome he wanted, but it did land him with the home-state organization he grew up watching.
And instead of easing into the moment, Kohler jumped straight into action.
He showed up at the Powder League, a Utah-based Pro-Am, and made a loud first impression. According to the league’s Instagram, Kohler finished with 32 points, 21 rebounds and five assists. That’s a serious line anywhere, and especially in a setting where the competition is stronger than your average pickup run.
The Powder League has drawn NBA names before, including Scottie Barnes and Keyonte George. George, who could one day be Kohler’s teammate if he sticks with the Jazz, posted 44 points and 10 assists there on a random Tuesday last summer.
Pro-Ams don’t usually turn into defensive grinders, but Kohler’s mix of production and work rate stood out anyway. For an undrafted free agent trying to carve out a place in Utah, 21 rebounds and 32 points is a strong way to start.
Kohler now turns his attention to Summer League and the chance to earn more than just a look. The next step is simple: keep pushing and try to play his way into at least a two-way contract.
He’s not the only Michigan State rookie big with something to prove. Carson Cooper signed a two-way deal with the Memphis Grizzlies within 24 hours of the 2026 NBA Draft ending, and he’ll spend the season around the organization under that agreement. There’s even a chance the former IMG B-teamer sees NBA minutes this year.
Both players were prepared for this stage by Tom Izzo, and both are set to be watched closely once Summer League action begins later this week.
Their first games come on the 4th of July - Cooper at 3 p.m. and Kohler at 5 p.m. - with both playing Monday, July 6, at 9 p.m. ET.
I know what I’m doing over the holiday weekend.

Former Spartan Thomas Kithier Lands Intriguing New Coaching Opportunity
Thomas Kithier is keeping his basketball career moving in a new direction, landing on the Utah State coaching staff after a playing career that made him a familiar name to Michigan State fans. The former Spartan, who was known for his rebounding and drew mixed reactions during his time in East Lansing, had already begun working in coaching and now gets another step up on that path.
Kithier previously coached under Dwayne Stephens at Western Michigan, where he continued to lean on the same traits that defined him as a player. His move into the Aggies' program adds another chapter to a career that shifted earlier than expected, after a back injury forced him out of playing and into the next phase of the game. [Read more 🡒]
Michigans Bryce Underwood Rumor Has Spartans Rolling Their Eyes
The latest round of Michigan quarterback chatter is making the rounds on Utah message boards, and it has already prompted plenty of eye-rolling across the border in East Lansing. The claim centers on Bryce Underwood and a possible shift in the Wolverines long-term thinking, but the whole thing is floating on anonymous sourcing and the kind of internet fuel that tends to burn hot for a day before fading.
For Spartans fans, the appeal is obvious: any uncertainty in Ann Arbor is worth monitoring, especially when Michigan is still sorting through its quarterback picture. The Wolverines are also looking at other options, including freshman Tommy Carr and transfer Colin Hurley, which only adds to the noise around the position even if nothing in the rumor mill has been confirmed.
