Michigan State’s Coen Carr has spent his college career being known for one thing above all else: ridiculous elevation. He’s the guy who can get above the rim in a hurry, but not the guy defenses fear from the outside.
That’s why a recent offseason video has turned heads. Carr now appears to have a real jump shot, and if that holds up in actual games, it could reshape his ceiling for the Spartans this season.

Still, the warning label matters here. Offseason videos can fool you, especially when they involve players who haven’t been shooters. But Carr’s case is intriguing because the improvement looks dramatic enough to at least wonder whether something has changed.
The numbers from his college career make the challenge clear. Carr has shot 56.5% overall, a figure helped heavily by the fact that when he gets near the basket, he finishes. Beyond that, the touch has been inconsistent.
He’s at 28.6% from 3-point range in his college career and 64.1% at the foul line. Those marks dipped a bit in 2025-26, when he shot 27.6% from deep and 62.9% from the stripe.
Even without a reliable jumper, Carr still put up 12.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2025-26. If Tom Izzo’s team gets this version of Carr - the leaper with a real outside shot - that’s a different kind of weapon altogether.
