Buffalo, N.Y. - Coen Carr Breaks Through with a Double-Double Performance
In a thrilling NCAA Tournament showdown, Michigan State's Coen Carr showcased his athletic prowess against Louisville, putting any health concerns to rest. The junior forward, known for his high-flying style, finally notched his first career double-double, posting an impressive 21 points and 10 rebounds in MSU's 77-69 victory over the Cardinals.
Carr, who hails from Stockbridge, Georgia, has long been on the cusp of this milestone, often falling just short with near-misses. But Saturday was different. By halftime, Carr had already racked up seven points and seven rebounds, setting the stage for his breakout performance.
"If I didn't get this one, then I would've had to go to the doctor or something, there might be something wrong with me," Carr joked in the locker room. But no doctor was needed; Carr's only high reading was his vertical leap.
The Spartans were lifted by Carr's dynamic energy, particularly in the second half. He came out of the locker room determined, adding 14 points and three rebounds to his tally. His back-to-back dunks electrified the crowd and his teammates, while his second 3-pointer helped MSU maintain their largest lead of the game.
Carr's defensive efforts were equally impressive. Tasked with guarding Louisville's Ryan Conwell, Carr's intensity was palpable. He blocked Conwell's shot, grabbed the loose ball, and celebrated with a primal scream that echoed through the arena.
MSU head coach Tom Izzo couldn't help but praise Carr's all-around performance. "Coen Carr played like the player we've all been waiting for," Izzo said. "He was incredible on both ends of the floor."
Carr's journey to this moment has been marked by perseverance and the support of his teammates. Sixth-year senior guard Trey Fort expressed amazement at Carr's achievement, knowing the potential that had been waiting to burst forth.
"Everybody's been on Coen, lifting Coen, because we know what he's capable of," Fort said. "The effort he gives on both ends, with the athleticism, we have something that nobody else in the country has."
As March Madness continues, Carr's performance serves as a beacon of what's possible when talent meets opportunity. His first double-double might just be the spark the Spartans need as they advance in the tournament.
"Just to be in March Madness, one of the greatest stages on earth, and to have a game like this, I just credit it to my coaches, my teammates, just for always believing in me," Carr reflected. "They want me to go out there and be aggressive, and that's what I tried to focus on today."
With Carr hitting his stride, Michigan State fans have plenty to be excited about as they look ahead in the tournament.
