Coach K Playfully Challenges Tom Izzo's 'Mr. March' Reputation

Coach K playfully challenges Tom Izzo's "Mr. March" legacy, hinting that "Mr. April" holds more weight in the race for NCAA glory.

Tom Izzo and Duke: It's a rivalry that never seems to fade. Over the years, Michigan State has managed to topple Duke a few times, but more often than not, the Blue Devils have come out on top.

The legendary battles between Izzo and Coach K are etched in college basketball history, with Coach K usually having the upper hand. However, one of the most unforgettable victories for the Spartans came seven years ago.

Izzo's squad stunned a Duke team featuring Zion Williamson and other future NBA stars. That win propelled Michigan State to the Final Four, underscoring why Izzo is affectionately known as “Mr.

March.” When the stakes are high, Izzo often finds a way.

Coach K reminisced about that game during a recent chat with Pat McAfee. With a playful nod to their rivalry, he teased Izzo about his nickname, suggesting that being "Mr. April" might be even better since it means winning it all.

"Tom Izzo is the crème de la crème of coaching," Coach K said, adding with a chuckle, "He's Mr. March, but I always tell him you wanna be Mr. April because that means you won the thing."

It's all in good fun, of course, as Coach K shares this banter directly with Izzo. And Izzo, ever the competitor, likely agrees.

He’s proud of Michigan State’s achievements under his leadership but remains hungry for more. There's a strong belief that he'll secure another national title before retiring.

Whether it happens this year or later, Izzo's determination is undeniable.

As the tournament unfolds, Duke and Michigan State could be on a collision course once again. While UConn might be the favorite in the East Region, the Spartans are a popular pick to challenge Duke. If these two powerhouses meet in the Elite Eight, it will be another chapter in their storied rivalry.

Duke boasts an impressive lineup, featuring the best player in college basketball and a deep bench. They even clinched the ACC Tournament title without two key starters.

Should they face off, Michigan State will once again play the underdog role to Duke's Goliath. Fans can only hope for a thrilling repeat of their epic 2019 showdown.
