AJ Hoggard’s game in the NBA Summer League finale felt like a throwback for anyone who followed his Michigan State career.
The former Spartan point guard turned in a line that looked awfully familiar: 6 points, 9 assists, 2-for-12 from the field, 0-for-4 from 3-point range, 1 turnover and 2 steals. That kind of box score was part of the AJ Hoggard experience in East Lansing - stretches where the shot wouldn’t fall, but the playmaking still showed up.
On Sunday night, Hoggard was with the Raptors in their loss to the Denver Nuggets, and he leaned into the same strengths that made him such an intriguing player at Michigan State. When the scoring dried up, he still found teammates, racked up nine assists and made his presence felt defensively with two steals.
Hoggard’s path through college basketball was a reminder of how close he came to becoming something bigger in East Lansing. He arrived as a rising name in the Michigan State program and had time to develop as a freshman during the COVID-19 season. That year gave him a chance to learn and build his basketball IQ.
By his sophomore season, he was flashing the kind of upside that had people thinking he could become the next big point guard for Tom Izzo. He averaged 7.0 points and 4.8 assists, with most of his scoring coming at the rim.
Then came his junior year, when he took another step forward and hit 33 percent of his threes. Hoggard finished that season at 12.9 points and 5.9 assists per game and was one of the most improved players in the Big Ten.
But the momentum didn’t carry the way it looked like it might. His senior year brought a drop-off, and the inconsistency that had followed him at times became harder to ignore. His field goal percentage went from 44 as a sophomore to 42 as a junior and then 41 as a senior.
That uneven stretch eventually led him to Vanderbilt to finish his college career, where his numbers dipped to 9.6 points and 4.6 assists per game. He was never a bad player, just a streaky one - good enough to make you see the ceiling, frustrating enough to keep it just out of reach.
There was always a sense that Hoggard could have been more in East Lansing if the growth had kept coming. Instead, the flashes and the rough patches stayed together, and now even in the Summer League, the same old pattern is still there.
Sometimes, he really was one.
