The New York Yankees are gearing up for another challenging season in the AL East, a division known for its fierce competition. Despite their potential to clinch the division and make a serious World Series run, the Yankees' decision to largely stick with their current roster hasn't exactly filled their fanbase with confidence.
In a recent survey by The Athletic, led by Stephen J. Nesbitt, Yankees fans surprisingly reported lower optimism for the 2026 season than Miami Marlins fans. According to the survey, 68.4% of Marlins fans feel hopeful about the upcoming season, slightly edging out Yankees fans, who sit at 67.6%.
Ranking 22nd in Major League Baseball for fan optimism, the Yankees find themselves only marginally ahead of the Chicago White Sox in this area. While this might catch some off guard, seasoned Yankees fans might not be too surprised.
Just last year, their optimism was at 68.1%, a marked decline from their 80.7% high in 2024. Over the past few years, the Yankees' optimism rankings have fluctuated, hitting 71.1% in 2023 and a low of 48% in 2022.
Despite positive changes, concerns linger. The decision to retain key players like Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, and Paul Goldschmidt has not universally inspired confidence. Additionally, issues like Jasson Dominguez's underwhelming performance, injuries to Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, and Anthony Volpe's struggles contribute to the unease among fans.
Interestingly, the Marlins, who are in the midst of a rebuild after trading away several key players, have managed to foster more optimism among their supporters. The survey, which gathered over 11,000 responses from fans across all 30 teams, highlights this unexpected sentiment shift.
As the season unfolds, the Yankees will aim to prove their skeptics wrong and rekindle the faith of their passionate fanbase.
