Marlins rookie outfielder Owen Caissie got his rehab assignment off to a loud start Tuesday night, homering for Triple-A Jacksonville while also reaching base three other times.
Caissie, who landed on the 10-day injured list on July 9 with a right calf strain, finished 1-for-1 with a hit-by-pitch and two walks. In his first trip to the plate, he was struck in the hip area by an 83.4 mph changeup on the third pitch he saw.
The biggest swing came after Mason Molina spent much of Caissie’s first two at-bats working him up and away. Molina leaned on his four-seamer for five of his first six pitches to the left-handed hitter, but when he came back with another fastball, Caissie was ready.
He turned on a 93 mph heater and sent it the other way and over the left-field wall for a solo homer. The Statcast-projected 349-foot shot left his bat at 101.2 mph and put Jacksonville ahead 2-0 in the third.
Caissie also drew a four-pitch walk from Ryan Fernandez in the seventh and another walk from Brycen Mautz in the fifth.
The rehab work comes after a brief setback. Caissie first felt tightness on July 7, and the original expectation was that he could return during next weekend. He was cleared on July 8, but he returned and exited that day’s game.
Before the Marlins’ 1-0 win against the Phillies at loanDepot park, manager Clayton McCullough laid out the plan for the Ontario native over the next three days, saying the club wanted to get him somewhere between 11 to 13 plate appearances with no off-days.
“He is going to DH today and then look to play the outfield [Wednesday],” McCullough said. “Then we’re still looking to have him DH the next day. … Then we’ll just see how he’s feeling and how he comes out of that.”
