Otto Lopez was out of the Marlins’ lineup Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, and the reason was a right ring finger that’s still barking after Saturday’s injury in the field.
The All-Star shortstop is dealing with inflammation in the finger, and the early read is encouraging enough: X-rays came back negative, and Miami is treating him as day to day.
“He's sore today,” manager Clayton McCullough said. “There's still some swelling there in the nail area. … Hopefully some of that soreness gets out of there, and he's able to ramp up some more baseball activity.”
The injury happened in the second inning Saturday when Lopez charged a grounder from Joey Ortiz that came off the bat at 98.9 mph. The ball took a hop on him, struck him in the nail area and led to a fielding error.
Lopez stayed in the game after that, but the finger was clearly an issue. He went hitless in his next three trips to the plate and also made another error.
“Checked in with him a couple times, watched him throw between innings,” McCullough said. “It was certainly bothering him.
At least, probably, what he had the benefit of yesterday was still having some adrenaline of being in the game to probably mitigate some of the pain. You can tell it was affecting him swinging [with] some of the early one-handed kind of finishes.
“He said that he was OK to keep going, and figured that today he was going to be much more sore than he was yesterday. So, give him today, and I think we'll just play the next couple of days by ear with how, again, the inflammation and some of the tenderness in there, how quickly that dissipates.”
Lopez said his nail helped shield the finger from worse damage, and the finger was taped up Sunday. The bigger problem, he said, was gripping the bat rather than throwing. Before the game, he played catch to see how the finger responded.
With Lopez unavailable, Miami made a roster move to cover the infield, recalling Graham Pauley from Triple-A Jacksonville and optioning outfielder Rece Hinds. Javier Sanoja got the start at shortstop in Lopez’s place for the series finale at American Family Field.
