The Marlins kept their Wild Card push alive Sunday afternoon with a burst of offense that turned loanDepot park into a runaway. Heriberto Hernández and Javier Sanoja each homered, Miami piled up 10 runs, and the Cubs were sent home with a 10-3 loss as the Marlins avoided the sweep.
Miami’s win moved the club back to .500 at 72-72 with 18 games left, and it pulled the Marlins within 3 1/2 games of Arizona, which was still playing Houston at the time of the final out, for the third and final National League Wild Card spot.
The tone was set early against right-hander Clay Holmes. In the second inning, Jakob Marsee singled and Hernández walked before a double steal opened the door. Joe Mack followed with an RBI groundout, and Otto Lopez added an RBI single to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
Lopez later swiped his 30th base of the season, becoming the second Marlin this year to reach that number alongside Esteury Ruiz. That also made them the fourth pair of Marlins teammates to hit the mark in the same season.
Hernández then added more separation in the fourth with a solo blast, his 24th homer of the season and the team lead. The Cubs, though, kept hanging around for a while. They scored once each in the third, fourth and fifth innings against right-hander Tyler Phillips to pull even at 3.
Miami answered with the kind of inning that blows a game wide open. The fifth started with Graham Pauley drawing a walk, Sanoja lining a single and Kyle Stowers walking to load the bases.
Griffin Conine was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and then Owen Caissie - acquired from the Cubs in a trade this past January - drove home two more on a ground ball to right. Hernández and Mack each added RBI singles to finish the five-run frame.
Six different Marlins drove in at least one run in the victory.

The Marlins have moved on quickly from Leo Jimenez, cutting ties with the infielder after designating him for assignment and then releasing him. Jimenez did enough to stick around for a short look, but not enough to carve out a longer path in Miamis roster picture. The Marlins could have kept him by outrighting him to the minors, but instead chose the cleaner break, giving him a chance to find another organization and leaving Miami to keep sorting through its infield mix.
