Marlins Have An Obvious First Base Decision To Make

As the Miami Marlins seek to bolster their lineup, free agent Ty France emerges as an ideal candidate with his proven performance against them and consistent power at the plate.

The Miami Marlins have a free-agent fit sitting right in front of them, and it comes in the form of Ty France.

France checks a lot of boxes for a club that needs help at first base. He’s one of the top options available at the position, and he already showed Miami exactly what he can do against its pitching during the 2026 season.

The Marlins saw enough of him to know the damage. Miami and San Diego played two three-game series, and the Padres swept both of them.

France was right in the middle of it. On July 25, he knocked in three runs with a two-run single in a 7-2 Padres win.

Then on Sep 19, he launched a three-run homer in the fifth inning of an 8-2 victory.

That kind of production wasn’t a one-off. France has faced the Marlins 28 times in his career, but his most recent work against them stands out the most.

Over his last 10 games against Miami, he hit .342 with 10 RBIs and four runs. The Marlins pitching staff simply didn’t have an answer.

His overall 2026 season backed up the interest, too. France finished with a .295 batting average, a .363 on-base percentage, a .502 slugging percentage and an .885 OPS, along with 21 home runs and 72 RBIs. He also turned in a strong showing in the division series against the Milwaukee Brewers, who are on the verge of winning the World Series.

This is a player with a résumé that stretches beyond one hot stretch against Miami. France was an All-Star with the Seattle Mariners in 2022, and he’s built his game around contact and power.

Six of his eight seasons have included more than 100 hits. He has also spent time with the Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays, in addition to five seasons with the Mariners.

There is still the question of where he lands. San Diego could be in position to make a strong pitch, especially with the organization having already handed out major deals to Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts. Staying in California would make sense for France, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Padres keep him.

But Miami can’t afford to sit back. The front office has to be willing to take a swing, and first base is a clear need. France fits what the Marlins are looking for: a reliable bat with plate discipline, the ability to draw walks and enough pop to change a game.

He can be a little noisy at the plate at times, especially with strikeouts, but the production is real. At 32, he still looks like a hitter who can help a young Marlins team and bring some presence to the clubhouse.

The fit is obvious. Now the Marlins have to act on it.

Three Marlins Suddenly Have Real Awards Season Momentum

Awards season is starting to look a lot kinder to the Marlins than many expected, with a few familiar names popping up on several ballot watch lists. Javier Sanoja has emerged as a finalist for the National League Gold Glove at third base, giving Miami a chance to be recognized for the kind of clean, steady defensive work that often gets overlooked during a long season. Otto Lopez is also in the mix for multiple honors, including the NL Silver Slugger and the MLB Players Alumni Association Heart & Hustle Award, adding a little more attention to a lineup that has quietly produced individual standouts.

Sandy Alcantaras case is the one that may carry the most weight beyond Miami, because his season has already put him back into the national conversation after surgery forced him to rebuild his place in the rotation. He is being talked about as a strong candidate for the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award, and the fact that he has handled a major workload only strengthens the impression that he is back to being one of the teams defining figures. For a club trying to establish credibility beyond the standings, having multiple players in the awards mix is a welcome sign. [Read more 🡒]
