The Dolphins Cancer Challenge is gearing up for a monumental milestone as more than 8,000 participants prepare to take part in its 16th edition on Saturday, Feb. 28. This event is on track to surpass an impressive $100 million raised for cancer research at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Among the dedicated riders is Dr. Stephen Nimer, Sylvester's director, who has been a part of the event since he joined the center in May 2012.
Dr. Nimer, inspired by the resilience of cancer patients, completed his first 100-mile ride that year and has continued to ride the full distance every year since.
His commitment is a testament to the spirit of the event.
In a recent training ride from the Design District to Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Nimer emphasized the camaraderie and connection among participants.
"We all talked the whole way about different things in life. Just a great day," he remarked, highlighting the community aspect of the event.
Since its inception in 2010, the Dolphins Cancer Challenge has become the largest charity event in the NFL, channeling every dollar into cancer research at Sylvester. Dr. Nimer explained the impact of reaching the $100 million mark, noting how it has enabled the recruitment of top physicians and scientists, funded crucial research, and supported survivorship programs.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of 73 NCI-designated centers in the U.S., has been recognized for its excellence in cancer care and research. The center plans to establish two endowed chairs to further pediatric cancer research and survivorship initiatives, underscoring the event's role in its growth.
Dr. Nimer is optimistic about the future, citing the vibrant South Florida community and the center's unique position as the only academic health system and NCI-designated cancer center within 300 miles. "Our message is going to continue to resonate in the population, and we're just going to keep getting bigger," he stated.
The event not only raises funds but also shines a light on the resilience of patients. Dr. Nimer shared a poignant story of a fellow rider undergoing radiation therapy who completed the 100-mile ride, inspiring others with his determination.
The partnership between the Miami Dolphins and Sylvester has flourished, creating a supportive community for patients and their families. "Over the years, the partnership has grown stronger.
Now we think of it as one big family, and it's been inspiring," Dr. Nimer shared, capturing the essence of this powerful collaboration.
