Before Miami’s first official basketball practice even got underway, Shelton Henderson made the direction of this Hurricanes team pretty clear.
The sophomore forward, who is stepping into the role of centerpiece for a revamped roster, said he likes what he’s seen from the group so far and believes Miami can push deeper this season.
“We’ve gotten close as a group,” he said. “I think we’re going to have a good shot this year at going farther than we did last year. I’m just looking forward to it.”
That confidence comes with a résumé that already gives Miami plenty to build around. As a freshman, the former five-star recruit averaged 13.8 points while shooting 56.7 percent from the field, along with 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals across 35 games, all starts. At 6-6 and 240 pounds, Henderson was a problem inside the arc, using his strength and athleticism to get to the rim and his touch to score from the midrange.
The one area that held him back was the three-point line. Henderson shot 25.5 percent from deep last season, and he pointed to shooting as a specific place he needs to improve if he wants to become a more complete player. If that part of his game comes around, it would make him a tougher cover and give Miami more room to work offensively.
Coach Lucas is expected to lean on the 19-year-old as the Hurricanes’ primary option.
Henderson’s growth matters beyond this season, too. His production, leadership and overall impact on the team will play a major role in shaping his outlook for the 2027 NBA Draft, where he is currently projected as a late first-round to early second-round pick.
Miami won’t get much time to settle in before the tests start. The Hurricanes open with a Sunshine State rematch against Florida on Nov. 2 in Tampa. Henderson was on the floor for the last meeting in the Jacksonville Hoops Showdown, where he posted seven points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal while getting his first real taste of a ranked opponent.

A familiar South Florida name is getting early traction, and Miami is giving itself a chance to stay involved. Justice Jones, a 2027 receiver and defensive back out of Park Vista, has put together a strong senior season on both sides of the ball, and his rise has started to draw more attention beyond the programs already on his offer sheet, which includes Akron, Florida Atlantic and Lenoir Rhyne.
