Michael Irvin is making sure Mark Fletcher Jr.’s mother can keep following Miami without the grind of another rental car marathon.
The former Hurricanes star and Pro Football Hall of Famer gave Linda Fletcher a custom RV, a gesture that fits right into what people around Miami call the “Canes family” connection. And for Linda Fletcher, it changes everything about how she gets to games.
She does not fly. She has said she does not like being on planes, so for most weekends she has been renting a car and driving wherever her son is playing.
That has meant some serious mileage. Her longest trip came with a round trip from Fort Lauderdale to Berkeley, California, for Miami’s 2024 game at Cal, a journey of roughly 6,200 miles. Last season also took her to College Station for the playoff opener against Texas A&M, to Arlington for the quarterfinal against Ohio State and to Glendale for the semifinal against Ole Miss.
The national championship game against Indiana was the easy one by comparison, since it was at Hard Rock Stadium and only about 15 minutes from her house.
Linda Fletcher has not missed a game since Mark Fletcher Sr. passed away unexpectedly in October 2024, just days before Miami played Florida State. On the field, Mark Fletcher Jr. put together a big year, running for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games.
He also caught 17 passes for 140 yards and two scores. His postseason run was even more eye-catching: he set a College Football Playoff record with 507 rushing yards across four postseason games, earned All-ACC third-team honors and now sits seventh in Miami history with 2,313 career rushing yards.
Irvin’s ties to the program run deep. He played at Miami from 1985 to 1987 and won a national championship in his final season. He remains one of the school’s most visible supporters, and anyone who follows the Hurricanes knows he is a regular presence on the sideline.
His production company will document Linda Fletcher’s travels this season as part of a series, starting with Miami’s opener Friday, Sept. 4, at Stanford, about 3,000 miles from Fort Lauderdale. Miami’s other road games are at Wake Forest, Clemson, North Carolina and Notre Dame on Nov. 7.
