College football’s opening week is already giving bettors a full menu, and Friday’s board offers a few spots worth circling. One of the cleanest reads is in Miami-Stanford, where the better play looks to be the over. Stanford showed real offensive punch in Week 0 against Hawaii, and Miami brings the kind of attack that can turn a game into a track meet in a hurry.
Stanford’s opener was no fluke from a box-score standpoint. The Cardinal rolled up 483 total yards, averaged 9.1 yards per pass attempt and 4.7 yards per rush. Andrew Luck and Tavita Pritchard appear to be making a significant impact on the program, and that offense looked capable of moving the ball in a hurry.
The question is what Stanford can do on the other side of the ball. That’s where the concern starts to creep in. Miami has the kind of explosive offense that can punish any hesitation, and there’s not enough evidence yet to believe Stanford’s defense is ready for a major jump.
That’s why this matchup feels more like a points game than a defensive grind. Miami should be able to score in bunches, and Stanford’s Week 0 performance suggests it can do enough on offense to keep its side of the total moving too. That makes the over the most appealing angle for Friday night.
Elsewhere on the slate, Toledo is another team that stands out. The Rockets were strong defensively last season, ranking sixth in the country in defensive efficiency, and they didn’t sit still in the transfer portal.
Michigan State, meanwhile, has plenty to prove after a rough stretch that included an 82nd-place ranking in EPA per play and 115th in opponent EPA per play last season. The Spartans are just 4-15 over their last two seasons, and there’s real doubt that one offseason and one new head coach will be enough to flip things quickly.
USC-Fresno State also deserves a look. USC scored 42 points in Week 0 against San Jose State, but it also gave up 26, which raises at least a small defensive flag.
Fresno State has plenty of production back from 2026, and Matt Entz returns after guiding the Bulldogs to a top-20 defense last season in defensive success rate. That’s enough to make Fresno State the side worth trusting against the spread.
For the Friday night spotlight, though, the best bet is the total in Miami-Stanford. Stanford’s offense looks live, Miami can light up the scoreboard, and both teams should have chances to put points on the board.
