Miami Surges Into Top 10 Leaving ACC Behind

Miami Hurricanes Surge to No. 8 in Preseason Rankings, Outpacing ACC Rivals with Stellar Offense and Defense.

The Miami Hurricanes are making waves in the 2026 preseason rankings, thanks to ESPN's advanced SP+ metric. This year, they've landed an impressive No. 8 spot, making them the ACC's top-ranked team, with Clemson trailing at No. 23.

The SP+ metric, crafted by Bill Connelly, offers a deep dive into college football efficiency, adjusting for tempo and opponent strength. It’s a forward-looking measure, focusing on sustainable performance rather than predicting the AP Top 25.

Miami's offense is ranked 12th nationally, while their defense sits comfortably at No. 7.

These rankings are built on four pillars: returning production, recent on-field success, recruiting prowess, and coaching changes. Despite ranking 78th in returning production-largely due to a shake-up on the offensive line-Miami's potential is undeniable.

Ohio State holds the top spot in the SP+ rankings, followed by Oregon, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Indiana. But Miami's position suggests they're a serious contender for the College Football Playoff.

The Hurricanes have bolstered their offense with Duke transfer quarterback Darian Mensah, who threw for nearly 4,000 yards last season. He’ll have plenty of targets, including standout receivers Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate, and running back Mark Fletcher, who all surpassed 1,000 yards in 2025.

On defense, Miami is retooling after losing key players like Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor. However, they’ve added talent with transfer Damon Wilson and returning stars such as Ahmad Moten and Marquise Lightfoot, among others. This depth makes Miami potentially the most talented squad they've fielded in two decades.

The Hurricanes’ 2026 schedule looks promising. They’ll face a mix of opponents, with Notre Dame as the standout challenge.

Ranked No. 3, the Irish bring back the most production nationally. Other notable matchups include Clemson, Florida State, and Virginia Tech, but outside of Notre Dame, the path seems manageable.

Miami will encounter only two preseason Top 25 offenses (Notre Dame and Duke) and two Top 25 defenses (Notre Dame and Clemson). With such a lineup, the Hurricanes have a clear shot at a successful postseason run. If they can harness their talent and grit, this could be a season to remember for Miami fans.
