Miami defensive back Zechariah Poyser likes what he’s seeing from the Hurricanes’ young secondary, and he says the group is settling in as Corey Hetherman’s system becomes more familiar.
Poyser pointed to freshman DB JJ Dunnigan and sophomore Bryce Fitzgerald as two standouts, and he had especially high praise for Dunnigan’s approach and physical tools.
“I think they’re both different players, but both [are] very players, for sure. [Dunnigan] is a mature, young dude.
… He flies around. Fast, big, strong.
I think he’ll have a big role this year and I’m excited to see what he’s going to do.”
That comfort level extends beyond individual players. Poyser said Miami’s communication has come a long way now that the Hurricanes have had two years in Hetherman’s defense, making things feel far more natural in camp.
“Yes, of course it’s easier. It’s like secondhand nature because, obviously, this is my second year in the defense.
The communication has gotten way better from day one to whatever day we’re on now. So, I most definitely can tell the difference in the communication, and it’s gotten way better and we [still] have a lot of work to do, but it’s getting there to where we need it to be.”
As the team pushes through the grind of camp before its first game, Poyser said the key is staying locked into the daily work and leaning on the people around him.
“Just fall in love with the process. I love being around my guys.
That helps me a lot. Just being excited to come in and get to work.
I feel like my guys help me a lot and just not paying attention to the rat poison or [anything] like that. So, I feel like just being around my guys and just being excited to be a Hurricane [helps], for real.”

Miami May Have A New Pass Rush Decision To Make Fast
A pass-rush twist has surfaced for Miami as Jack Pyburn, the former LSU defensive end, suddenly has another path back to college football. Pyburn has already been in the NFL orbit with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and his name is now back in the mix after a legal ruling reopened the door to another season on campus.
If Pyburn does make the jump into the transfer portal, he would be free to pick any program, and Miami could be one of the schools that makes sense because of prior recruiting ties. For a Hurricanes staff always looking to add proven edge help, the timing could matter, especially with a decision point like this potentially arriving fast. [Read more 🡒]
Miami Fall Camp Is Revealing Whos Forcing Their Way Into Starting Jobs
Fall camp is already sorting out Miamis depth chart, and the receiver room has been one of the clearest places where jobs are starting to take shape. With Cam Vaughn gone, the Hurricanes have been able to see who is ready to absorb those snaps, and the early chatter around practice has centered on Malachi Toney, Cooper Barkate, plus the mix of freshmen and portal additions trying to carve out roles.
The same kind of pressure is showing up across the line and in the secondary, where every rep matters for players trying to move up the pecking order. Samson Okunlolas work at left tackle has been a notable development, while Dereon Colemans growth at quarterback adds another layer to a camp that seems to be clarifying a lot of questions, even if a few of the biggest lineup decisions are still waiting to be settled.
