Miami's receiving corps was already a force to be reckoned with, propelling the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff national championship game last season. Now, according to ESPN analyst Greg McElroy, they've only gotten better.
McElroy ranks Miami at No. 4 in his preseason list of college football's top pass-catching units, trailing only Ohio State, Texas, and Oregon. This puts the Hurricanes ahead of notable programs like Florida, LSU, Clemson, Indiana, Oklahoma, and USC.
In McElroy's words, "Miami is the only unit in the Top 10 that is probably better than it was a year ago." While other programs have lost key players, Miami's receiving room has arguably strengthened.
Leading this formidable group are Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate. Toney, a star in his own right, makes Miami a tough matchup for any defense.
With Barkate now on board, the Hurricanes boast a second proven 1,000-yard receiver. Barkate reunites with quarterback Darian Mensah after their successful 2025 season together at Duke.
Last season, Toney and Barkate combined for an impressive 181 receptions, 2,317 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns.
Barkate's addition is a game-changer for Miami's offense. Defenses that double down on Toney will find themselves leaving Barkate in advantageous situations. On the flip side, balanced coverage could open up running lanes for Mark Fletcher Jr. and give Mensah more opportunities to distribute the ball effectively.
Miami didn't stop there. They bolstered their lineup through the transfer portal, bringing in Vandrevius Jacobs, who led South Carolina with 32 receptions, 548 receiving yards, and four touchdowns in 2025. Cam Vaughn also joins the Hurricanes, transferring from West Virginia after posting 35 catches for 540 yards and four touchdowns.
The Hurricanes are also looking to the future with a stellar high school recruiting class. Milan Parris, Tyran Evans, Somourian Wingo, and Vance Spafford have all joined the team, adding depth and competition for future seasons.
With this combination of proven talent and promising newcomers, Miami's receiving unit is poised to make waves this season. Keep an eye on the Hurricanes as they look to build on last year's success and challenge for the top spot in college football's elite receiving ranks.

Phil Steele Sees Miami As Elite Almost Everywhere But One Spot
Phil Steeles 2026 college football preview sees plenty to like about Miami, and the national respect shows up across the roster. Five of the Hurricanes eight position groups land in the top 15, with the quarterback, running back and wide receiver rooms all rated among the nations best. Add in a defense that also draws strong marks, and it is easy to see why Miami comes off as one of the more complete teams in the country entering the season.
The one area that keeps the picture from looking fully polished is up front, where the offensive line sits well behind the rest of the roster at No. 39. Miami still stacks up seventh nationally overall in top-15 position groups, but the gap in the trenches is the kind of thing that can matter once the games get physical. The Hurricanes have talent nearly everywhere else, yet the question hanging over the unit is whether that line can catch up quickly enough to match the rest of the teams ceiling. [Read more 🡒]
Miami Just Added Another Proven Piece To Its Portal Surge
Miamis transfer haul keeps growing, and the latest addition adds another layer of credibility to a portal class that has already turned heads around the ACC. Trent Caraway, a junior third baseman who has moved from Oregon State to LSU and is now spending the summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League, brings a familiar blend of experience and infield stability to a roster being reshaped quickly.
The Canes incoming transfer group is now ranked No. 5 nationally and leads the ACC, a sign that the staff is not just filling holes but targeting players with a track record at major programs. Caraways path has already taken him through a College World Series run and a stop in Baton Rouge, and Miamis aggressiveness in the portal suggests there may still be more coming as the class takes its final shape. Michael Irvin Sees Something In Malachi Toney Miami Fans Will Love
Michael Irvin has always carried weight in Miami, and when the Hall of Famer speaks highly of a Hurricanes receiver, people around the program tend to listen. During a public appearance, Irvin singled out Malachi Toney for the kind of traits coaches love to point to but fans do not always see first: maturity, work ethic and a steady on-field presence that already stands out. He also praised the way Toney handles the dirty work, saying his blocking and overall approach reflect a player who understands what it takes to earn trust.
For Miami, the encouraging part is not just the compliment, but the ceiling Irvin sees if Toney keeps trending in the right direction. The former Canes star believes the receiver has the ability to develop into an early NFL draft pick and eventually join the conversation among the best wideouts in school history. Coming from someone with Irvins place in Miami lore, that kind of projection only adds to the buzz around a player whose rise is already getting noticed. [Read more 🡒]
