Miami Just Took An Unexpected Hit In Its Receiver Room

Cam Vaughn's sudden departure leaves a gap in Miami's receiving corps as they head into the new season.

Miami has parted ways with wide receiver Cam Vaughn, with coach Mario Cristobal announcing Monday morning on The Joe Rose Show that Vaughn is no longer in the program.

"Cam Vaughn has been dismissed from the team," Cristobal said.

Vaughn arrived in Coral Gables in January as a transfer after one season at West Virginia, and Miami also brought in former South Carolina wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs and former Duke wide receiver Cooper Barkate during last winter’s portal cycle. Through most of his time with the Hurricanes, Vaughn was working with the third-team offense.

The former Jacksonville State and West Virginia receiver entered the transfer cycle as the No. 160 overall player and No. 36 wide receiver. Across two seasons with the Gamecocks and Mountaineers, he totaled 83 catches for 1,344 yards and nine touchdowns. His production included 35 receptions for 541 yards and four touchdowns in the Big 12 last fall, along with 48 catches for 803 yards and five scores at Jacksonville State.

Vaughn spent fall camp battling for playing time in a crowded Miami receiver room that included Josh Moore, Daylyn Upshaw, Somourian Wingo and Jacobs. Even with the uncertainty around his role, he had drawn positive reviews since joining the team.

"Cam is an unbelievable ball of talent. He can do anything he wants to do on that football field. Right now, it's just a matter of him showing up every day with the mindset of knowing what he's doing, attack consistently every day," wide receivers coach Kevin Beard said during the program's Media Day ahead of fall camp.

Miami’s offense is expected to be built around wide receiver Malachi Toney, quarterback Darian Mensah and running back Mark Fletcher. The Hurricanes are ranked No. 7 in the country entering the 2026 season in the Coaches Poll, and they open on Friday, September 4, on the road against Stanford.

Miami Scrimmage Put Two Early Roster Battles Under The Spotlight

The first scrimmage of Miamis 2026 fall camp gave the coaching staff an early look at where the depth chart is taking shape, and just as importantly, where it still needs work. The Hurricanes came out of the session with a better sense of player performance across the board, but a few spots already have the feel of real camp battles, especially on offense as the staff sorts through who fits where once the pads are on and the tempo picks up.

One of the most closely watched jobs is the third receiver role, a spot that could end up mattering plenty once the season starts. Up front, SJ Alofaituli is also under the microscope at left guard, where his frame stands out next to Miamis other top linemen, and the staff will keep using the coming scrimmages to see whether he can hold that spot. Freshmen are in the mix, too, with a chance to turn early camp work into meaningful snaps if they keep making the right impression. [Read more 🡒]

Miami Is Already Making Tough Camp Cuts At A Key Position

Miamis camp has already turned serious at wide receiver, where the Hurricanes are still sorting out a crowded group ahead of the season opener against Stanford. Three players have been dismissed during camp, part of a broader push as the staff continues to evaluate effort and consistency in practice.

Head coach Manny Diaz addressed the situation on a radio show and made clear that the standard in camp is not optional. The message is aimed at a position group with plenty of competition, and the ongoing cuts show Miami is willing to make difficult decisions now rather than let camp drag on with unfinished business.
