Miami ended July with a loud one.
The Hurricanes picked up a commitment Friday from Miami Columbus athlete A’Mir Sears, and the move gives Mario Cristobal’s program another major piece in what’s shaping up to be an imposing run on the recruiting trail. Sears had reclassified last week from the 2028 class to 2027, then set his commitment for Friday and made it official in Miami fashion: he reached into the bag by his feet, pulled out the Hurricanes hat, and flashed the U.
Sears arrives with serious acclaim. He was the No. 2 overall player in 2028 for Rivals and No. 1 overall for 247 Sports before the reclassification, and he remained a five-star after moving into 2027.
The production backs up the hype, too. Last year, Sears put up 49 catches for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense, then added 61 tackles, three interceptions, and 11 pass breakups on defense.
That kind of versatility is why he’s being talked about in such rarefied company. One recruiting expert was cited as saying Sears is the best recruit to come out of South Florida since Jeremiah Smith.
And Sears isn’t standing alone.
Five-star Miami Carol City wide receiver Nick Lennear is already committed for 2027, giving Miami two of the region’s premier talents headed to Coral Gables. The bigger picture is just as striking: for once, the very best in South Florida appear to be staying home.
That’s the shift Miami has been chasing for years. The Hurricanes have the look of a title contender, they’ve been aggressive in NIL, and they’ve shown recent development and draft success.
For too long, players such as Patrick Peterson, Calvin Ridley, and Jeremiah Smith left South Florida to win big elsewhere. This class could be the one that starts turning that tide back toward Miami.
And the reach may not stop there.
Five-star 2028 Jacksonville Mandarin wide receiver Brysen Wright is on Sears’ radar, and Sears has already tried to help the cause. He gave Wright a shoutout on Instagram after Wright visited Miami in June.

Miamis pass rush picture for this season has already been complicated by injuries and by the usual churn that comes with a big recruiting haul, and Hayden Lowe was supposed to be part of the answer. The five-star member of the Hurricanes 2025 class sat out last season because of an injury, then was expected to get a real shot at carving out playing time once camp opened.
Instead, recent reports have raised fresh questions about whether Lowe is even on the roster, and there was no sign of him at media day.
