Miami has its quarterback, and now Darian Mensah is being treated like the ACC’s best.
Andy Staples of On3 put out his top 10 quarterbacks in the conference on Thursday, and Mensah landed at No. 1, just ahead of California’s Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
The buzz around Mensah is easy to trace. He redshirted at Tulane in 2023 while sitting behind Michael Pratt and Kai Horton, then took over as the Green Wave starter and produced 2,723 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions in his lone season in that role.
Duke brought him in during the 2025 offseason to replace Maalik Murphy, who transferred to Oregon State, and Mensah delivered in a big way. He threw for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading the Blue Devils to their first ACC title in 63 years.
His path to Miami took another turn on Jan. 16, when he entered the NCAA transfer portal in the afternoon, within 12 hours of the two-week entry window closing.
Before that move, Mensah had signed an NIL extension with Duke for the 2026 season. Duke sued him over what it said was a breach of that agreement, but the two sides eventually settled, clearing the way for his transfer to Miami.
A lot of the excitement comes from what Mensah has already done with less-heralded pieces around him. At Tulane and Duke, he stepped into the starting job and quickly settled in, helping both programs reach conference championship appearances, something that does not come around often for either school.
Tulane has become a steady Group of Six power over the last five seasons, but its history is still marked by plenty of losing. Duke has settled into a middle-of-the-pack ACC spot, but the Blue Devils had only one winning season between 1989 and 2013.
Now Mensah is walking into a Miami offense that already has plenty to work with. The Hurricanes return one of the best running backs in college football in Mark Fletcher and one of the most electric playmakers in the country in Malachi Toney. They also added wide receiver Cooper Barkate from the portal, and Barkate was Mensah’s favorite target at Duke last season.
Quarterback play was a major reason Miami came up short in the College Football Playoff, and Mensah is expected to give the Hurricanes a different look. The appeal is straightforward: more juice as a runner, and a steadier hand when it comes to protecting the football through the air.
