It’s Fourth of July week, and the sports calendar has basically hit pause. College sports are wrapped up for now, things are going to move slowly on the field for a bit, but not around here. Season preview content is coming soon, and recruiting never stops.
Miami’s baseball roster is already getting a fresh look after Daniel Cuvet moved on to the professional ranks, and J.D. Arteaga wasted no time filling that opening. The addition he landed is LSU infielder Trent Caraway.
Caraway may not jump off the page to everyone after his lone season with a forgettable Tigers team, but he brings a much stronger recent résumé from his time at Oregon State. In 2025, he hit .267 with an .820 OPS, 12 home runs, and 47 RBIs while playing third base for the Beavers and helping them get to Omaha. Miami still has to sort out exactly how third base will shake out, but bringing in a player with that kind of College World Series experience is a welcome move.
Arteaga also added several pitchers, and that part of the haul looks just as important. Blake Morningstar, Chase Swift, Dylan Mulcahy, Mason Horwat, and Skyler Hutto are all headed to Coral Gables.
Morningstar’s numbers dipped last year, but his 2025 season was strong enough to earn first team All-ACC honors. He finished 6-2 with a 3.87 ERA.
Hutto, meanwhile, brings back-end bullpen potential after a standout 2026 season at Jacksonville State. He went 6-4 with a 2.20 ERA across 41 innings, and opponents hit just .164 against him.

There’s real promise in that pitching group, but the only way to know whether Miami’s arms are actually better is to wait until February. Still, there’s reason to feel good about the direction.
Mario Cristobal’s 2027 class is already loaded, but he’s also made some early moves for the future beyond that. Last week, he picked up commitments from a pair of Carrollton, Georgia teammates: 2029 quarterback CJ Cypher and 2028 offensive tackle Kweli Fielder.
Fielder is currently ranked by Rivals as the No. 43 overall player, the No. 5 offensive tackle, and the No. 7 player in Georgia for the 2028 class. Cypher doesn’t have a rating yet since he’s in the 2029 cycle, but the ceiling is very, very high with him.

Miamis run to the College Football Playoff title game gave the program a lot to celebrate, but it also left behind a quieter question for 2026: how much mileage did the Hurricanes put on a few cornerstone players along the way? Malachi Toney, Mohamed Toure, Zechariah Poyser and Mark Fletcher Jr. were all central to that 16-game march, and the demands of carrying such a long season are part of the backdrop now as Miami looks ahead.
The good news for the Hurricanes is that the roster picture should look different next fall, with transfers and returning pieces expected to help spread the workload. Still, the value of those stars comes with a physical cost, and Miami has to balance what they already gave the team against what it will ask of them next, especially with so much of the lineup coming off extended use and deep-season experience. Miamis quarterback room got a respectable national nod, but not one that feels likely to sit well in Coral Gables. CBS Sports placed the Hurricanes at No. 8 in its latest quarterback-room rankings, a spot that acknowledges the mix of experience and depth but still leaves room for an argument that this group belongs a little higher. Darian Mensah gives the room a clear headliner, and the overall makeup reflects how Mario Cristobal has leaned into the transfer market to stabilize the position.
The bigger appeal for Miami is that the conversation does not stop with the starter. The room also includes Luke Nickel, Dereon Coleman, Judd Anderson, Joe Borchers and Vinny Gonzalez, giving the Hurricanes a deeper collection of scholarship options than many teams can claim. Bucs Coaches Already See Something Special In Former Cane Rueben Bain
Rueben Bain has barely had time to settle into the NFL, but the former Miami standout is already giving Buccaneers coaches plenty to like. During offseason workouts and rookie minicamp, Tampa Bay has seen the physical tools that made Bain such a coveted prospect, along with a level of intelligence and pass-rushing feel that has stood out to Larry Foote and Todd Bowles.
For a defensive front that is trying to build depth, Bain offers more than just size and burst. The Bucs have also added Al-Quadin Muhammad to the mix, but Bain is the name drawing the early attention because of the way he studies the game and carries himself on the field.
