Miami Hurricanes Stun Georgia Southern With Explosive Fourth Quarter Comeback

After a two-year absence from postseason play, the Miami Hurricanes unleashed a dominant fourth-quarter surge to decisively defeat Georgia Southern in the WBIT opener.

The Miami Hurricanes made a triumphant return to postseason basketball, dominating Georgia Southern with an 82-56 victory in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament opener.

After a two-year break from postseason play, the Hurricanes looked eager and ready to make their mark. Meanwhile, Georgia Southern was making only its fourth postseason appearance, setting the stage for an intriguing matchup.

The Hurricanes came out strong in the first quarter, relentlessly attacking the paint and racking up layups with ease. Georgia Southern tried to keep pace, but Miami unleashed a fierce 9-0 run, pulling ahead to a 22-12 lead. The energy at the Watsco Center was electric, with Amarachi Kimpson, Gal Raviv, and Ahnay Adams leading the charge.

Miami's head coach, Tricia Cullop, was animated on the sidelines, pushing her team to extend their lead as the second quarter began. However, the Eagles weren’t backing down. They tightened their defense and chipped away at the Hurricanes' lead, closing the gap to just two points by halftime, 30-28, after Kimpson’s initial layup extended the lead to 12.

Kimpson was on fire, putting up 19 points and continuing her impressive season with new career highs. Her performance was crucial in maintaining Miami's momentum.

As the second half kicked off, the Hurricanes found their offensive rhythm once more. Adams, the seasoned sophomore guard, sank two free throws to get things rolling, and Miami never looked back. Her experience was invaluable, helping to steer the team through the game’s ebbs and flows.

The Hurricanes ended the third quarter with a ten-point lead and then exploded in the fourth quarter. With UM President Joe Echevarria cheering from the sidelines, Miami launched a decisive 19-7 run. Despite Georgia Southern’s efforts, they couldn’t counter Miami’s offensive onslaught.

By the final buzzer, the Hurricanes had extended their lead to a commanding 82-56 victory. Postgame, Coach Cullop expressed her pride in the team’s performance, especially given the roster changes they faced.

“I am so proud of this team,” Cullop remarked. “In the postseason, every team is tough, and you have to bring your best effort every game.”

Looking ahead, the Hurricanes will face three-seeded Wisconsin at the Watsco Center on Sunday at 12 p.m., eager to build on their impressive start.
