When the Miami Hurricanes hit the practice field, especially in the trenches, it's a spectacle you don't want to miss.
Under head coach Mario Cristobal, the Hurricanes' practices are all about intensity and competition. These midweek sessions are designed to set the tone for the spring and beyond. While full-contact collisions aren't on the agenda just yet, the drills are packed with energy and a hint of the toughness we can expect from the offensive and defensive lines this season.
A Sneak Peek into Hurricanes' Line Battles
Here's what stood out from a recent practice video:
- Freshman sensation Jackson Cantwell (#79) is already turning heads. At 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds, he's a formidable presence on the field. Slated to start at right tackle, Cantwell is making the most of his first-team reps.
- Watching Jason Taylor in action is always a treat. The defensive ends coach, and Pro Football Hall of Famer, was a bit hoarse when he spoke to the media, joking about his constant yelling, even when he's in a good mood.
- In a standout moment, Ryan Rodriguez appeared to get the upper hand on Jarquez Carter (#91), driving him back effectively. It leaves us wondering if Carter managed to bounce back in subsequent reps.
- Freshmen Israel Briggs (#14) and Ben Congdon (#58) teamed up for a strong double team on Herbert Scroggins III. Briggs' tenacity in the blocking drill is sure to earn him points with the coaching staff.
- A highlight of the Hurricanes' culture is Akheem Mesidor's involvement in practice as he preps for the NFL Draft. The video shows him mentoring freshman DeAnthony Lafayette, a testament to the leadership and camaraderie within the team.
"Mes was at practice today, before practice, and was working with [Marquise] Lightfoot and Armando [Blount]," Taylor noted. "They're still here.
They're still around. Obviously, they're going to be picked in three or four weeks, and they'll be gone.
But that way of life, that standard that everybody in that room got to see for the last couple of years, is contagious."
The Hurricanes are building something special, and these practice insights provide a glimpse into the hard work and dedication fueling their journey.
