Coach Jai Lucas has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball program, transforming it from a struggling team into a rising force.
In his debut season, Lucas guided the Hurricanes to a solid regular season and a spot in the "March Madness" tournament. Although their run was brief, it laid a strong foundation for the future of the program under his leadership. Reflecting on the journey, Lucas expressed deep gratitude for his team’s trust and effort.
“This first year was an absolute pleasure and a joy to coach this team,” Lucas shared. “I thank them for believing in me, a first-time head coach.
Everything they gave me this year, I’m forever grateful. While it’s tough right now, I’m incredibly proud and will cherish this forever.”
Taking over a program that had hit rock bottom with a 7-24 record and the mid-season retirement of long-time coach Jim Larranaga, Lucas faced a daunting task. Known for his recruiting prowess at Duke and Kentucky, Lucas brought in key players like seniors Tre Donaldson, Malik Reneau, and Ernest Udeh Jr., along with junior Tru Washington. These recruits thrived, achieving career-best performances in their inaugural season with Miami.
“It started with Malik and Tre,” Lucas explained. “They were my first two commits and the foundation of the team.
Their commitment led to others like Shelton [Henderson], Ernest, and Tru joining us. As a former player who transferred, I wanted to ensure they got the most out of their final year.
Both Malik and Tre earned All-Conference honors, with Malik on the first team and Tre on the second. Shelton deserved All-Freshman recognition, but that’s another story.
I owe them so much.”
“They’ve positioned Miami basketball to only move upward.”
Looking ahead, the Hurricanes have the chance to build on this momentum. With players like Henderson, Washington, and freshman guard Dante Allen expected to return, the team is poised for further growth. Their NCAA Tournament appearance and competitive spirit make Miami an attractive destination for recruits from high schools and the transfer portal, eager to join Lucas’s revitalized roster.
