As the Miami Hurricanes gear up for spring training, all eyes are on the tight end position. With Elija Lofton coming off a stellar season and Alex Bauman moving on, the stage is set for a new face to emerge. Enter Luka Gilbert, a four-star prospect with a golden opportunity to make his mark.
Lofton has established himself as the go-to option, boasting 23 catches for 218 yards and three touchdowns last season. But with Bauman's departure, who steps up next is the burning question.
Bauman's exit leaves a gap. He had a solid stint with the Hurricanes after transferring from Tulane, where he made 18 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown. Now, the remaining tight ends are relatively untested, paving the way for potential breakout stars like Gilbert.
Gilbert, just 19, had his pick of top programs, including Ohio State, Texas A&M, Louisville, and Michigan, but chose the Hurricanes in April 2024. He was initially recruited by Cody Woodiel, now with Ole Miss, and will be under the guidance of newly appointed tight ends coach Mike Viti, announced on March 5.
Standing tall at 6-7 and weighing 255 pounds, Gilbert is already recognized for his blocking prowess. However, his route-running skills at the collegiate level remain a question mark. If he can step up as a playmaker, there's a clear path for him to crack the rotation.
Coach Viti brings a strong resume, having served as the offensive line coach for Army, a team that allowed the fewest sacks in the nation last season. His expertise could be instrumental in enhancing Gilbert's blocking abilities, adding a valuable asset to the Hurricanes' lineup.
The Hurricanes have a reputation for developing talent, which bodes well for Gilbert's potential breakout. Despite a busy offseason with transfer additions, including All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah, no new tight ends were brought in, highlighting the confidence in the current roster.
Fresh off a National Championship appearance, the Hurricanes have set a new standard. Gilbert, having witnessed this success firsthand, now has the chance to carve out significant playing time and become a key contributor in the upcoming season.
