Miami Hurricanes Eye Former Four-Star As Transfer Shakeup Looms

As roster changes loom and NFL departures mount, the Hurricanes may circle back to a familiar name to bolster their defensive line through the transfer portal.

As the Miami Hurricanes gear up for their College Football Playoff run, the action off the field is just as intense as what’s happening on it. While the spotlight is firmly on the postseason push, Mario Cristobal and his staff are already working behind the scenes to shape the next chapter of the program - and that includes monitoring the ever-active transfer portal.

Among the most intriguing names surfacing is UCF defensive lineman John Walker, a former four-star recruit who’s reportedly set to enter the portal. For Miami, a potential reunion with Walker could be more than just a nostalgic recruiting story - it might be a timely addition to a defense preparing to reload.

Walker, a redshirt sophomore, has shown flashes of high-level production during his time with the Knights. Over two seasons, he totaled 59 tackles (29 solo), 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup.

While those numbers don’t leap off the stat sheet, they come with context: Walker missed the entire 2024 season due to a leg injury. Before that setback, he was trending upward, and now, healthy again, he could be a valuable piece for a team looking to fill some big shoes.

And Miami will need to do exactly that. With Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor among the players expected to declare for the NFL Draft, the Hurricanes are staring down some serious turnover in the trenches.

Bain and Mesidor were high-impact players, disruptive forces on the edge who helped anchor the defensive front. Replacing that production won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible - especially if the ‘Canes can land a talent like Walker.

Let’s not forget, Walker was once heavily recruited by Miami. Back in 2020, he received an offer from the Hurricanes and made several unofficial visits.

Defensive line coach Joe Salave'a was part of that early recruitment push. Ultimately, Walker committed to UCF in July 2022, but the interest from Coral Gables was real - and now, with a second chance potentially on the table, that door could swing open again.

Walker’s high school resume speaks volumes. At Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Florida, he racked up 254 total tackles, 40 sacks, and 57 tackles for loss across 48 games.

That kind of production made him a hot commodity, with offers from Florida, Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Oregon - the list goes on. The talent is clearly there.

The question is whether Miami sees him as a plug-and-play contributor or a developmental piece with long-term upside.

It’s worth noting that Miami has taken calculated risks on injured players before. Just look at Carson Beck, who came to the program after undergoing UCL surgery following the SEC Championship Game in 2024.

That gamble paid off. If they believe Walker is back to full strength, he could follow a similar path - from injury rehab to impact player.

Walker would bring size, experience, and a chip on his shoulder to a defensive line that will be looking to re-establish its identity in 2025. Whether he ends up as a rotational depth piece or pushes for a starting role, his presence would raise the floor - and potentially the ceiling - of the defensive front.

And he’s not alone. Walker is just one of 37 defensive linemen expected to enter the transfer portal this cycle.

With more departures likely as the playoff picture unfolds, Miami will have plenty of opportunities to reshape its roster. But Walker, a local product with unfinished business and a history with the program, might just be one of the more compelling options on the board.

The Hurricanes are building for the future while chasing a championship in the present. If they can thread that needle - adding the right blend of veteran talent and young upside - they’ll be in position to stay relevant long after the playoff lights go out.

Keep an eye on Walker. This one could come full circle.
