Miami’s freshman class has one headliner and one long-term project, and Christopher Birden Jr. looks built for the patient route.
While Jai Lucas brought in eight transfers to reshape the roster, the Hurricanes also added a pair of freshmen. Caleb Gaskins arrives with plenty of buzz after coming out of Christopher Columbus High School in Melbourne, Fla., as a five-star recruit. He posted 22.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists as a senior, according to MaxPreps, and he could step in right away with starter projections.
Birden Jr., though, comes in with far less certainty. The New Orleans native was a three-star recruit and ranked among ESPN’s top 60 power forwards. He went from Isidore Newman School to South Kent School before committing to Miami in late April, but there are no public high school stats available for him.
What does stand out is the raw tool kit. Film shows a big man with guard-like handles and the ability to score at all three levels.
He’s listed at 6-10 and 200 pounds, and WNGO says he has a 6-10 wingspan and a 42-inch vertical. That gives him real upside as a rebounder and a possible shot-blocking rim protector.
Lucas isn’t hiding the plan. “We got a good group of freshmen," he told Vince Wolfram on That's A W.
"Chris Birden is one that we are going to develop and take some time. I don't know how much he'll play this year.
He's going to be a good player down the road.”
That kind of timeline fits Miami’s new developmental blueprint. Lucas, who has spent time around NBA-level talent as an assistant at Kentucky and Duke, appears comfortable letting Birden learn behind the veterans instead of forcing him into the rotation too soon.
Even if his role is limited, Miami will need him ready. The Hurricanes have at least 30 regular-season games, and Birden should have chances to get on the floor, especially before ACC play ramps up. The upside is obvious; the immediate workload may not be.
Still, the path is there. Miami opens the 2026-27 season against the Florida Gators in Tampa on Nov. 2, with less than 50 days until tipoff. For Birden Jr., the early chapter is about development first and opportunity later.
