The No. 6 Miami Hurricanes are back at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend for their final non-conference game of the 2026 regular season, and Central Michigan comes in as a heavy underdog with a very specific identity.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. EST, with the game airing on the CW Network.
Miami is 3-0 after a 33-20 win over Wake Forest, while Central Michigan is 2-1 and fresh off a 24-10 victory against Wyoming. The Chippewas opened the season with a 38-7 loss to New Mexico.
FanDuel Sportsbook lists Miami as a 41.5-point favorite.
Central Michigan doesn’t try to hide what it wants to be. Matt Drinkall’s team leans on a run-first “power-spread” approach, mixing old-school power concepts with spread looks and pre-snap motion.
That plan has shown up in the numbers: the Chippewas have run the ball 131 times and thrown it only 44 times. On offense, they’re putting up 14.7 points per game, while the defense is allowing 19.3.
Drinkall is in his second season at Central Michigan after going 7-6 in 2025. Before that, he was at Army from 2019-24, and earlier he led NAIA Kansas Wesleyan from 2014-18, where he went 42-17.
Last season, Central Michigan saw two Power Four opponents and took losses to Pittsburgh, 47-15, and Michigan, 63-3. Miami and Central Michigan last met in 2021, when the Hurricanes won 17-12 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Here’s a look at the Chippewas’ key names to know heading into the matchup.
Quarterback Angel Flores has become the focal point of the run game. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound transfer from Northern Arizona has completed 14 of 26 passes for 103 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
On the ground, though, he leads the team with 312 rushing yards and three scores on 60 carries. He has completed just 1 of 7 passes that have traveled more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage.
Behind him, Vaughn Blue has given Central Michigan another running threat. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Liberty transfer is second on the team with 24 carries and third with 107 rushing yards, plus one touchdown.
In 2025, he ran for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Against Wyoming, he finished with 55 yards on 15 carries.
Jayden Clerveaux adds more downhill power to the backfield. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound transfer from Holy Cross ran for 762 yards and five touchdowns at the FCS level and has opened the 2026 season with 124 yards on 19 carries. He’s a north-south runner who averages 3.21 yards per carry after contact.
The passing game has not been a major feature, but Langston Lewis is still the top target. The 6-foot, 195-pound receiver leads the team in targets and has caught 4 of 9 passes for 21 yards. Last season, he led Central Michigan with 43 catches for 596 yards and three touchdowns.
Up front, the offensive line has had its share of issues in protection. Tackles Martin Koivisto and Jacob Booth have combined to allow seven pressures and three sacks, while the interior line has given up 10 pressures. Even so, Central Michigan has limited opponents to 3.33 tackles for loss per game, which ranks 33rd nationally.
On the defensive side, Korver Demma has been the most disruptive edge player. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound end leads the team with 10 pressures and has one sack.
He posted 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and 18 quarterback pressures in 2025, and he had three pressures against Wyoming. He has also missed five tackles this season.
Demma began his career at Nebraska.
Hunter Zirkle is next in the edge rotation and has the second-most quarterback pressures on the team. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound end recorded four pressures against Wyoming and has missed five tackles this year.
Inside, Jaxon Cherry has given Central Michigan active play at defensive tackle. The 6-foot-1, 265-pound lineman is described as an undersized interior defender who plays with a high motor. He has an 82.1 defense grade and a 78.0 pass rush grade, and he has totaled eight tackles and half a sack after playing last season at Iowa Western Junior College.
At linebacker, Mayson Hitchens has been productive in the middle. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Weber State transfer is second on the team with 21 tackles and has added an interception. He has played 1,410 defensive snaps.
Xavier White leads the team in tackles from the weak side with 28. The 6-foot, 235-pound linebacker has a 63.8 run defense grade and a 45.8 tackling grade from PFF and has missed six tackles.
In the secondary, Darrell Bryant has been active near the line of scrimmage. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Northern Colorado transfer has 18 tackles and one interception, and he has been targeted nine times in coverage, allowing seven catches for 110 yards.
Justin Taylor has been the more efficient cover man. The 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back, who previously played at Wyoming and Wisconsin, has 16 tackles and one interception. He has been targeted nine times and allowed three catches for six yards, while earning an 85.7 coverage grade and an 89.4 tackling grade from PFF.
