Miami Gets A New Injury Concern Before A Tough Pitt Test

Miami Hurricanes navigate injury changes as they prepare to face a depleted Pitt team in a crucial matchup.

The first availability report for Miami’s matchup with Pitt brought a fresh name onto the Hurricanes’ injury list, even as the No. 1 team in the country shifts its full attention to the Panthers.

Freshman wide receiver Milan Parris has been added to the report for the first time this season. His situation does not change the outlook for Miami’s wide receiver room or the players who contribute away from the ball, but it does chip away at depth.

Pitt, meanwhile, comes into the game with eight players out against the Hurricanes. The headliner is quarterback Mason Heintschel, who tore his ACL in a win over Virginia Tech.

Miami’s injury situation has been one of the season’s constant themes, but it was not a factor after the Hurricanes outlasted Florida State in double overtime. The bigger question now is when some of the sidelined players can get back, especially in the secondary, where Miami needs its two top corners available again.

OJ Frederique could return later in the season, according to Mario Cristobal, and the same outlook applies to sophomore Ja'Boree Antoine.

"He's progressing well," Cristobal said in an update on Antonie during his Monday press conference. "He's still going to be out for a significant amount of time. We see it more towards the end of this year"

For now, though, the focus is squarely on Pitt and the matchup it presents for Miami.

"All focus right now is turned to Pittsburgh," Cristobal said. "Really good football team, top ten as it relates to just being disruptive, tackles for losses, pressure on the quarterback, high-pressure operation, high-movement operation.

Very veteran offensive and defensive line, very disruptive. On the defensive side of the ball, their secondary does a great job holding the picture in there, disguising coverage.

Their linebackers get downhill in a hurry.

"I think they're number seven in the country in terms of interceptions. Their offense is top ten in, you name it: yards, total yards, passing offense, running the football, and just a very big and physical offensive line that they know what they're doing, they communicate really well, really good footwork, and playing really, really good football.

Miami Mourns A Former Hurricane Who Meant Far More Than Football

The Hurricanes are dealing with the loss of one of their own, as former Miami standout and NFL player Bailey has died. Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs after his college career, Bailey left an imprint that went beyond the field, with former teammates remembering both what he accomplished and who he was. The tributes that followed reflected how deeply he was regarded in the program and how much he meant to the people around him.

On a brighter note for Miami, Malachi Toney earned the Paul Hornung Award for National Player of the Week after his performance against Florida State. It was the kind of recognition that underscored how much impact he made in one of the seasons biggest games, giving the Hurricanes something to celebrate even as they remembered a former player whose presence clearly resonated far beyond football. Miami Just Got A Huge Recruiting Chance It Couldnt Afford To Lose

DJ Jacobs, one of the top edge rushers in the 2027 class, is set to be in Miami for the Hurricanes home game, and he wont be coming alone. The five-star Ohio State commit is expected to visit with his younger brother Dawson Jacobs, a four-star defensive line prospect, giving Miami a chance to make a strong impression on a pair of defensive talents the staff has continued to monitor closely.

For Mario Cristobal and his staff, the timing matters. Miamis 2027 class still has room after a recent decommitment, and the Hurricanes have kept active contact with DJ Jacobs as they look to stay in the mix. Whether the visit leads to anything more remains unclear, but it gives Miami a meaningful opening to re-engage two prospects who could shape the future of its defensive front. [Read more 🡒]

Miami Rivalry Win Took A Dark Turn For Damon Wilson II

Miamis win over Florida State should have been remembered for the usual fallout from a rivalry game, but Damon Wilson II instead found himself dealing with something far uglier. After the Hurricanes pulled out the victory, Wilson said he received alleged racist messages on Instagram from Kade McLendon, an employee of The Florida Bar, turning a big night for Miami into a reminder of how quickly online abuse can seep into the aftermath of college sports.

The Florida Bar has since placed McLendon on administrative leave and opened an internal investigation into the messages, which are said to violate the organizations social media policy. The review is still ongoing, and the Bar has said it intends to enforce its policies while also protecting due process rights, leaving the episode in an unsettled place even as Miami moves on from the game itself.
