North Carolina and Miami have spent nearly eight decades trading blows in a series that rarely stays lopsided for long, and Saturday night at Kenan Stadium gives the No. 1 Hurricanes a shot to change the latest chapter. The Tar Heels have won five straight, the longest run by either team in the matchup, and Miami will try to halt that streak on Halloween.
North Carolina owns the 16-11 advantage in 27 on-field meetings since 1946, but the numbers only tell part of the story. This rivalry has been built on tight finishes, sudden swings and the occasional stunner. Thirteen of the games have been decided by eight points or fewer, and the total scoring edge is narrow too: 675 points for North Carolina, 657 for Miami.
The programs did not meet regularly until Miami entered the ACC in 2004, then squared off every season through 2023. The Hurricanes have had a tough time in Chapel Hill overall, going 3-8 in 11 trips there, while the split in Miami is even at 8-8.
Some of the best memories in the series have come with the game hanging in the balance. In 2004, Miami arrived in Chapel Hill at 6-0 with national-title hopes, only to lose 31-28 on a 42-yard field goal by freshman kicker Connor Barth as time expired. Miami’s most recent win at Kenan came on Halloween weekend in 2017, when the eighth-ranked Hurricanes survived 24-19 and moved to 7-0 on their way to an ACC Coastal title.
The Hurricanes’ last victory in the series overall came the next season, when their defense forced six turnovers and scored three defensive touchdowns in a 47-10 home win, their largest margin in the matchup. Since then, North Carolina has taken over.
That Tar Heels run started in 2019 with a 28-25 home win in Mack Brown’s return, decided by a Sam Howell touchdown pass with just over a minute left. In 2020, North Carolina set an NCAA FBS record at the time for combined rushing yards by teammates, with Michael Carter rushing for 308 and Javonte Williams adding 236 in a 62-26 win in Miami Gardens. Close three-point victories followed in 2021 and 2022, then UNC won again in Chapel Hill in 2023, 41-31.
The series has produced its share of other notable moments, too. Miami won 27-23 on the road in 2013 on a late touchdown, while North Carolina rolled to a 59-21 home win in 2015.
The full history stretches back to Oct. 4, 1946, when North Carolina beat Miami 21-0 in Miami. The Tar Heels won the first three meetings, all in Miami, before the Hurricanes answered with three straight from 1959 through 1961. After the 1963 game in Chapel Hill, the teams did not meet again for 41 years.

Miami Heads To UNC With One Injury Concern Still Lingering
Miami heads to North Carolina with the usual late-week injury report bringing more questions than comfort, even before the trip north gets underway. Six Hurricanes are already ruled out, including wide receiver Joshua Moore and running back CharMar Brown, thinning out depth at two spots Miami would prefer to keep stocked for a road game with real ACC weight.
Milan Parris, the freshman who had been worth monitoring, is not listed, but the lingering concern around veteran cornerback Xavier Lucas keeps at least one part of Miamis preparation under a bit of a cloud. UNC has its own defensive uncertainty with several starters either out or questionable, so the matchup carries the feel of a game where availability could matter as much as scheme once the teams finally take the field. Notre Dame Could Be Miamis Biggest Unbeaten Test Yet
Miami heads into Halloween weekend as one of just three unbeaten FBS teams left standing, and the attention now shifts from preserving the perfect record to surviving what comes next. The Hurricanes have paired a strong offense with a defense that has kept opposing teams under control, which has made their start look sustainable rather than lucky, but the calendar only gets less forgiving from here.
Notre Dame looms as the kind of matchup that can tell everyone whether Miamis unbeaten run is a statement or just a fast start. Other unbeaten teams like Utah and UCLA have their own tricky paths ahead, and projections still point to all three landing in the same neighborhood by seasons end, but for Miami the next test could be the one that defines how serious this season really is. Belichick Faces A Brutal North Carolina Test At No. 1 Miami
Miami has climbed to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002, and the timing only sharpens the spotlight on what comes next. A strong start has pushed the Hurricanes into rarefied territory, backed by a 14-1 run over their last 15 games and powered by a roster that can make almost any Saturday feel like a showcase.
North Carolina arrives with its own history in this matchup, having won the last five meetings, including two against Miami coach Mario Cristobal. The Tar Heels will have to deal with two Heisman Trophy contenders in quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney, both of whom sit near the top of the national statistical picture, which is exactly why this game feels less like a checkpoint and more like a measuring stick.
