Pitt’s backfield took another hit Friday, with running back Ja’Kyrian Turner now ruled out for Saturday’s game against No. 1 Miami after being bumped up to probable on Thursday’s ACC availability report.
Turner’s status swung late in the week, going from questionable on the initial report to probable on Thursday before the final update shut the door on his return. The sophomore from Wildwood, Fla., has been limited to just three games this season because of a lower-body injury, and he did not play in last week’s loss at Boston College. He has not taken the field since the Oct. 10 game against North Carolina.
For Pitt, losing Turner means losing one of its most productive playmakers when healthy. In his three appearances this season, he has 30 carries for 131 yards and one touchdown, while also catching 10 passes for 107 yards and another score. Against North Carolina, his last outing, he finished with five carries for 27 yards.
Turner’s absence matters even more because of what he did a season ago. As a true freshman in 2025, he paced Pitt with 140 carries for 745 yards and seven touchdowns, adding 25 receptions for 150 yards. He also showed his ceiling with a 201-yard rushing performance at Georgia Tech last season.
With Turner out, the Panthers will have to keep leaning on freshman Damon Ferguson Jr. and sixth-year back La'Vell Wright. Ferguson has become Pitt’s top rusher with 83 carries for 438 yards and three touchdowns, while Wright has chipped in 59 carries for 242 yards and four scores.
The injury news leaves Pitt even thinner for an upset bid against Miami, especially with starting quarterback Mason Heintschel already out for the season because of a torn ACL. Fifth-year senior Holden Geriner is expected to start at quarterback, and true freshman Corey Dailey could also see snaps after starting last week’s 27-21 loss at Boston College, when he went 11-of-25 for 193 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Geriner made his first career start against North Carolina on Oct. 10, completing 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards and two interceptions in a 21-17 home loss. Earlier in October, he also came on in relief at Virginia Tech and helped Pitt hang on for a 35-33 win.

No. 1 Miami Just Sent A Scary Message To Everyone
Miami kept rolling as the No. 1 team in the country, and the balance in its latest win is exactly what has made this start so convincing. Freshman Javian Mallory gave the ground game a real spark with 47 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Darian Mensah carved up the defense for 387 passing yards and four scores, giving the Hurricanes the kind of layered attack that can stress opponents in more than one way.
The defense matched the offenses urgency, too, with two sacks, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble while keeping the other side under 100 rushing yards. For a team that has looked complete from week to week, the bigger question now is how long this pace can hold, because Miami has started to separate itself in a way that feels less like a hot streak and more like a warning to the rest of the sport. Mario Cristobals Postgame Moment Kept Miamis Feud In The Spotlight
Miamis decisive win over Pitt should have been the nights biggest takeaway, and in many ways it was, but the postgame scene between Mario Cristobal and Pat Narduzzi made sure the earlier back-and-forth between the programs stayed in view. The two coaches exchanged a handshake after the game, a brief moment that carried extra weight after Narduzzis public accusations about Miamis recruiting tactics had already sharpened the edge around this matchup.
The interaction looked tense but still cordial, even if Cristobals gestures were read by some as more forceful than routine. Pitt was already dealing with a quarterback injury that shaped the way the game unfolded, so the result and the atmosphere around it were both lopsided in Miamis favor. Still, with the feud lingering in the background, the postgame exchange added one more layer to a rivalry that has been impossible to separate from the scoreboard. [Read more 🡒]
Jameis Winston Just Added Fuel To Miamis FSU Rivalry Win
The fallout from Miamis 43-35 double-overtime win over Florida State has stretched well beyond the final whistle, with former Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston taking aim at the officiating after the rivalry game. A controversial holding penalty erased a touchdown, and a reviewed interception call stood after review, leaving plenty for Florida State to revisit after a frustrating night in one of the ACCs biggest games.
Mike Norvell was already on record expressing dissatisfaction with the officiating and said he contacted the ACC supervisor of officials about the calls. Winstons comments only added another layer to a result that already carried plenty of heat, giving Miami fans even more reason to savor a win that came with the kind of late-game drama this rivalry rarely lacks.
