Miami Fans Have Several Week 5 Games That Suddenly Matter

Miami fans have a thrilling weekend ahead as the Hurricanes hit the road for a much-anticipated clash with Clemson, as other key ACC matchups keep the stakes high on the gridiron.

Miami’s Week 5 watch list has a clear headliner: the Hurricanes’ trip to Clemson in primetime Saturday. But before that one takes over the weekend, there’s a full slate worth watching, especially in the afternoon window when several games could ripple into Miami’s ACC picture.

The ACC doesn’t give Miami fans a ton of late-day drama outside the Clemson buildup, but Friday night opens with a good one in Blacksburg. Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech both come in unbeaten, and somebody’s 0 is going to disappear.

The buzz around this game is obvious, especially with the ticket prices climbing and Virginia Tech riding a 4-0 start under James Franklin. Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel also has plenty to prove.

He’s been electric against weaker opponents, piling up 856 yards and 13 touchdowns against Miami (Ohio) and Bucknell, but the picture changes against Power Four competition. Against UCF and Syracuse, he’s been much more ordinary, completing 53.8 percent of his passes with zero touchdowns.

Both teams are on Miami’s schedule, and that makes this one even more relevant than it might have looked in August.

Saturday noon brings No. 3 Notre Dame to North Carolina, and the matchup comes with a little schedule chatter baked in.

Notre Dame fans have spent plenty of time talking about Miami’s slate, but the Irish’s last three opponents were Rice, Michigan State, and Purdue, and those teams combined for a 4-8 record. North Carolina and Michigan State aren’t identical, but they do share some toughness and some real limitations on offense.

Notre Dame handled the Spartans, 27-10, and a similar kind of result feels likely in Chapel Hill. Still, the Tar Heels bring enough punch to at least make the Irish work for it.

Another ACC game worth tracking is Louisville at NC State at 3:30 p.m. on the ACC Network. NC State is NC State, as the saying goes, and Dave Doeren’s team is exactly the kind of group that tends to be a headache at home.

Louisville needs a response after getting upset by Wake Forest, but it’s too early to dismiss the Cardinals. If they can go into Carter-Finley and leave with a win, the rest of the schedule could open the door for a run.

The other afternoon ACC game sends Virginia to Florida State at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Virginia has a big one here because the back half of October is about to get rough for the Cavaliers.

Florida State, meanwhile, has become the kind of home team that lets visitors come in and do damage. The Mike Norvell watch continues, and the sense is he’ll make it to Hard Rock Stadium in a couple of weeks.

Even with how bad the Seminoles have looked, they’re still the next opponent and still the biggest rival, so they can’t be brushed aside.

Outside the league, there are three games with real College Football Playoff consequences. The best of the bunch might be No.

7 Alabama at No. 16 Mississippi State at noon on ABC.

The quarterback matchup is the one to watch, with Keelon Russell and Kamario Taylor set to square off. Don’t be shocked if the winner pushes into the Heisman conversation alongside Darian Mensah and Jeremiah Smith.

It’s a great way to start the day: a playoff-caliber team on the road against an ambitious conference opponent that wants to be taken seriously.

At 3:30 p.m., No. 5 Ohio State visits No.

14 Iowa on CBS, while No. 8 Florida goes to No.

25 Missouri on ABC. The two games carry a similar feel.

Ohio State and Florida look legitimate, and both rosters have real Heisman contenders. Iowa and Missouri, though, leave more questions - especially Missouri, which does not look like a top-25 team.

Still, both road games are dangerous.

The Buckeyes are heading to Iowa City for only the fifth time since 2004, and they’ve split the previous four trips, 2-2. Florida has had its own trouble in Columbia, where Missouri has gone 4-2 at home against the Gators.

These are the kind of games that test whether the favorites are ready for the long haul. For Ohio State, a second loss would put the Buckeyes right on the CFP borderline.

Miami Tackle Samson Okunlola Has A Chance To Change The Narrative

Samson Okunlola is starting to look like the kind of player Miami has been waiting for along the offensive line. The redshirt junior has taken over at left tackle this season, and his mix of athleticism and versatility has already pushed him into a much bigger conversation, with CBS Sports projecting him as a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. For a program that has spent plenty of time searching for stability up front, that is the kind of buzz that can matter.

Okunlola arrived at Miami with five-star expectations out of the 2023 high school class, and his college career has gradually started to match the recruiting hype. He has shown more improvement and consistency in his playing time, which is exactly what the Hurricanes need from a blindside protector heading into the next stretch. If he keeps trending the right way, the early draft chatter may be only the beginning of a much bigger story. [Read more 🡒]

Florida State Fans Already Have One Road Trip Circled In 2026

The 2026 Miami-Florida State meeting at Hard Rock Stadium already has the feel of one of the must-see dates on the ACC calendar. The Seminoles are set to travel to Miami on Saturday, Oct. 17, in a game that should draw plenty of interest from both fan bases, especially with the full schedules now out and the rivalry tucked into the middle of the fall slate.

Ticket information is already part of the conversation, which tells you how much anticipation surrounds this one even with the game still far off. With both programs 2026 schedules in view and recent results helping shape the early storyline, the matchup offers an easy target for fans planning ahead, whether they are looking at the Hurricanes home lineup or eyeing a trip south for one of the ACCs most recognizable showdowns. Darian Mensahs Hot Start Faces Miamis Biggest Test Yet

Darian Mensah has given Miami exactly the kind of early-season steadiness that can settle an offense and raise expectations fast. The Hurricanes quarterback has been remarkably precise, completing 94 of 106 passes with 14 touchdowns, and teammates and coaches have repeatedly pointed to how easy he makes it on his receivers by putting the ball where it can be caught.

His start has already produced a record-setting stretch, including 24 straight completions against Wake Forest, and he remains one of only two FBS quarterbacks to throw at least three touchdown passes in every game this season. Now the challenge gets more serious for Miami, because the next stretch will tell whether that clean, efficient run can hold up once the opposition starts forcing tougher answers and making every throw a little harder to come by.
