The Miami Hurricanes wasted no time making a statement in their 2026 season opener, steamrolling Florida A&M 84-7 at Hard Rock Stadium in front of a visibly impressive Thursday night crowd.
This one was over fast. Miami piled up 856 yards of total offense, the third-most in ACC history, and finished with 41 first downs, an ACC record. The Hurricanes’ offense kept landing punches from the opening series, and the defense never let the Rattlers breathe.
Darian Mensah was nearly flawless while the game was still in the hands of the starters. He operated seven drives and produced seven touchdowns, going 14-of-15 for 252 yards with three passing scores. Miami also got a huge night from Mark Fletcher, Jr., who turned seven carries into 105 yards and two touchdowns, while Malachi Toney caught four passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.
The tone was set right away. Miami handed the ball to Fletcher three times on the opening drive, and he finished it with a 46-yard touchdown.
After a punt, Mensah hit Josh Moore in stride for a 55-yard score. Another quick punt followed, and Fletcher crossed into the end zone again with ease.
The Hurricanes kept rolling from there. Malachi Toney got loose for a 19-yard touchdown after shaking his defender, then Girard Pringle, Jr. sliced through the defense for a 4-yard score.
Mensah also found Cooper Barkate on a perfect fade for a 9-yard touchdown, and Javian Mallory capped the first-half surge with an 11-yard run to make it 49-0. By then, the starters were finished with one incompletion and no third downs.
Luke Nickel took over and kept the offense humming. He opened the third quarter by dropping a 47-yard touchdown to Somourian Wingo, then added scoring throws to Vandrevious Jacobs for 33 yards and Vance Spafford for 21. Nickel finished 8-of-8 for 144 yards and three touchdowns, and one of his best throws came on the back line of the end zone, where he threaded the ball to Spafford between two defenders.
Mallory put the finishing touch on Miami’s offensive explosion with a 52-yard touchdown run, staying tight to the sideline on his way to the end zone and giving the Hurricanes a 77-0 lead. He ended the night with 142 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns in his first home action.
Florida A&M’s lone points came on a strip-fumble return in the fourth quarter against Miami’s deeper reserves.
The Hurricanes’ defense matched the offense’s dominance. Florida A&M finished with just 107 total yards, including 70 through the air and 37 on 21 rushing attempts.
Miami limited the Rattlers to almost nothing all night, and FAMU crossed midfield on offense only once. The two sacks don’t fully capture how little the Rattlers were allowed to do, but the defense was in control from start to finish.
