Miami Faces Its Biggest Test Yet With Everything On The Line

Top-ranked Miami faces a formidable challenge against Notre Dame in this pivotal clash, with both teams boasting high-powered offenses and Heisman hopefuls leading the charge.

Saturday night in South Bend has all the makings of a heavyweight fight. No.

1 Miami walks in unbeaten at 8-0, but the Hurricanes are still the underdog against No. 4 Notre Dame in a game with real College Football Playoff and Heisman ripple effects.

The setup is as big as it gets. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah and Notre Dame star CJ Carr are both in the thick of the Heisman race, with Mensah sitting first in the odds and Carr fourth. And with the Irish at home, a win would do more than just shake up the rankings - it could flip the top spot in the country.

Notre Dame comes in at 7-1 after blowing out Navy in Week 9, with its lone loss coming against BYU. Miami, meanwhile, had to sweat out Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels before pulling away late with two touchdowns to stay perfect.

The numbers say this should be a track meet. Notre Dame is No. 2 in the nation in adjusted EPA/Play, while Miami is right there at No.

  1. On offense, the Hurricanes have been even sharper, sitting No. 1 in adjusted EPA/Play and EPA/Pass and No. 2 in success rate.

Notre Dame isn’t far behind at No. 3 in offensive success rate.

That makes the matchup between Carr and Miami’s shaky pass defense especially important. The Hurricanes are 110th in the country in EPA/Pass allowed, and Carr should have chances to work through the air at home. He’s already thrown 18 touchdowns against just one interception this season, and he added two more scores in the Navy win.

Still, Miami has enough firepower to answer. Mensah, Malachi Toney and Mark Fletcher Jr. give the Hurricanes plenty of ways to attack, and the offense has been producing at a high level all season. The question is whether the defense can hold up long enough to keep pace.

Oddsmakers have Notre Dame as a 5.5-point favorite, with the total set at 57.5.

The lean here is Miami against the spread, but the stronger play is the OVER. Miami has gone for 58 or more total points in four games this season, including three straight, and its defense has slipped in recent weeks, giving up 35 points in an overtime win over Florida State, 23 to a banged-up Pitt team and 35 to UNC in Week 9.

Notre Dame has been just as capable of piling up points. The Irish have scored at least 35 in six of eight games this season, and they’ve already shown they can get into a shootout, putting up 63 points while allowing 26 to UNC in an 11-point win a few weeks ago. Even in the loss to BYU, Notre Dame still scored 28.

Between two elite offenses, a vulnerable Miami pass defense and a Notre Dame attack that has been rolling, this one looks built for points. Mensah may be the better quarterback right now, but the safer angle is the over.

Odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

Notre Dame Suddenly Hands Miami A Huge Opening In South Bend

Notre Dames injury report ahead of its meeting with Miami has turned a routine pregame update into a meaningful subplot, with several important names either questionable or already ruled out. The list is especially notable on defense, where star tackle Francis Brewu is dealing with a left knee injury and captain linebacker Drayk Bowen will not play because of a right ankle issue, while multiple other linemen are also unavailable.

For Miami, the timing matters. Any trip to South Bend brings its own pressure, but the Hurricanes now have a clearer path to attack a Notre Dame roster that is missing depth in the trenches and a key voice in the middle of the defense. Even before kickoff, the matchup has shifted a bit, and Miami will be watching closely to see whether the Irish can recover any of those pieces before game time. [Read more 🡒]

Elija Lofton Is Giving Miami A New Reason To Feel Dangerous

Elija Lofton has quietly become one of the more interesting pieces in Miamis offense over the last six games, and his expanded role is starting to show up in the kinds of moments that matter. The junior tight end was especially noticeable against UNC, when he caught three passes for 48 yards and helped keep a key scoring drive alive with a 12-yard grab that extended the lead.

For an offense looking for more reliable answers in the middle of the field, Loftons emergence gives Miami another layer to work with. Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson singled out his play as pivotal in that crucial drive, and the Hurricanes now have a tight end who is not just filling snaps but helping tilt possessions their way. Notre Dame Just Got A CFP Reality Check Before Miami

The first College Football Playoff rankings have already stirred up the kind of debate that tends to follow this committee all the way through November, and Miami has a front-row seat to it. The initial reveal looked very different from the AP Top 25, with some notable shakeups near the top and a field that included 10 SEC teams, while Indiana emerged as the highest-ranked Big Ten team despite some surprising factors.

For the Hurricanes, the bigger subplot is what this says about the road ahead and the kind of scrutiny their own rsum will face as the season unfolds. CFP committee chairman Hunter Yurachek said ranking teams in such a competitive year is no easy task, and the early board made clear that reputation, conference strength and small details can all matter just as much as what the pollsters have been saying each week.
