A’Mir Sears has turned the 2027 recruiting race into a two-team sprint, and Miami appears to be running in front.
The five-star cornerback from Pembroke Pines, Fla., reclassified up one year and instantly became the top uncommitted player in the class. That move shifted the board at the top of the cycle, and now the question is whether Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes can close or if Michigan can pull off a late swing.
For now, Miami has the edge. Multiple recruiting insiders believe Sears will eventually land with the Hurricanes, and the program has been working this one for a long time. Miami first offered him in July of 2024, stayed active in his recruitment, built a strong relationship, and brought him to campus several times along the way.
The Hurricanes also have plenty to sell on the defensive back front. Their class is already ranked third nationally this summer, and it includes two high-end cornerback pledges in No. 1 corner Donte Wright from Georgia and No. 13 Ai’King Hall from Oregon, both of whom flipped to Miami.
Michigan is still hanging around, even if it’s been more of a chase than a true head-to-head battle in recent reporting. Rivals recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong described the Wolverines’ push as, “Still shooting its shot,” and the school remains in the mix as a possible finalist. The Wolverines are ranked No. 11 in the country and already have one blue-chip defensive back committed this cycle in No. 15 cornerback Monsanna Torbert from Ohio.
Sears’ rise has been obvious for a while. When he was still in the 2028 class, he was viewed as the No. 1 cornerback and the top overall prospect at any position in the country by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. After the reclassification, he slid a bit in the rankings, but not by much.
He is now the No. 1 overall uncommitted recruit in 2027 and the No. 13 player nationally in an industry weighted average of national recruiting opinion. That same average has him as the No. 3 cornerback in the country, the No. 2 recruit in Florida, and a five-star again.
Sears has also brought a two-way background to the table, with varsity experience at receiver helping sharpen the ball skills that show up on defense. He’s viewed as a polished, Power Four-ready cover man, and his decision is set for July 31. Right now, Miami looks like the team to beat.
