Former Miami tight end Alex Bauman is making a late push to get back on a college football field, and he may have a real argument.
Bauman has filed for a TRO that would let him enter the transfer portal and play another season, even though the timing is awkward at best. He spent one year with the Hurricanes after transferring from Tulane and finished that season with 18 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown. Miami also got valuable work from him as a blocker, especially when it came to pass protection.
His most memorable moment in a Hurricanes uniform, though, is one he would probably rather erase. In the second half of last year’s CFP Championship game, Bauman missed a blocking assignment, which opened the door for Indiana’s Mikail Kamara to block a punt. The Hoosiers recovered it in the end zone, and that swing play helped decide Miami’s 27-21 loss.

Bauman’s case stands apart from a lot of the other Class of 2022 players chasing a fifth year. Unlike former Hurricanes linebacker Wesley Bissainthe or a chunk of the LSU roster, he was not in an NFL camp, did not appear in NFL preseason games and, from all indications, never even got to a rookie minicamp. He has been trying to move on into work outside of sports, which makes the idea of returning for one more college season easier to understand.
Miami could certainly use him, too. The Hurricanes have only one tight end on the roster with any experience in Elija Lofton, while sophomore Luka Gilbert is out for the season because of an injury.
Freshman Gavin Mueller, a former four-star recruit, will need to play, and redshirt junior Owen Ruskavich is also expected to take on more after mainly handling special teams work. Bauman would give that group a dependable blocker and another option as a receiver in the red zone and on short-yardage snaps.
The problem is the calendar. Classes at Miami started last Wednesday, and with today, September 2, serving as the drop/add deadline, Bauman would have to enroll immediately for there to be any realistic path back to the Hurricanes. As things stand, that looks unlikely.
Still, the larger point remains: one mistake should not define his whole Miami run. He was a solid player for the Hurricanes last season, and football always asks more than one person to get a play right. If the 5-for-5 rule had been in place, Bauman would still be eligible to play college football.
