Miami is already set to roll into the new college football season with another big-name transfer quarterback in Darian Mensah, but the conversation around the Hurricanes’ future under center may not stop there. If Mario Cristobal decides to keep swinging in the portal, one name that could sit at the top of the wish list is Arch Manning.
Cristobal said at ACC Kickoff Media Day that Miami is ready to move forward without chasing another transfer quarterback. Still, he also left the door open, saying the program would explore a unique opportunity if it surfaced. That’s where Manning comes in.
The Manning name carries a heavy load all by itself. The family’s football résumé includes 20 total Pro Bowl honors and four Super Bowls, and Arch has the added burden of being a third-generation quarterback expected to live up to elite standards. He’s also doing it in the Southeastern Conference, where every snap gets magnified.
Manning has been at Texas since graduating from Isidore Newman School in 2023. He didn’t begin as the starter, spending time behind Quinn Ewers before taking over in 2025. Once he became the full-time quarterback, he put together a strong season, completing 248 of 404 passes for a 61.4 percent completion rate, throwing for 3,163 yards and 26 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 13 games.
Even with those numbers, Texas finished 9-3 in the regular season. The Longhorns dropped key games to Ohio State, Florida, and Georgia, and the committee didn’t see enough there to include them in the College Football Playoffs. For Manning, the first full season in charge ended with more frustration than payoff.
Texas also loaded up around him, adding 23 transfers and a top-10 freshman class.
That matters because if the Longhorns stumble again, the odds of Manning testing the transfer portal only grow. Jumping straight to the NFL Draft without a stronger college résumé could be a risky move, even with his obvious talent. He has the kind of individual tools scouts will want to study, but team success still matters.
Miami has never been shy about circling the market for high-end quarterback talent, and the program’s recent track record gives it a real pitch. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shannon Dawson helped turn Cam Ward and Carson Beck into major success stories with the Hurricanes, and both left with promising NFL futures. Dawson is trying to do the same thing with Mensah now.
If Manning ever becomes available, Miami would have the financial muscle to put together an appealing NIL package. And the Hurricanes’ history with elite transfer quarterbacks gives them a legitimate case.
For now, the spotlight stays on what happens after the 2026 college football season. That’s when Manning’s decision will be worth watching.
