Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi says the postgame moment that lit up social media with Miami coach Mario Cristobal was nothing more than a friendly exchange.
After Miami’s 52-23 victory, video of the two coaches repeatedly patting each other on the back and shoulders spread quickly, and the scene drew even more attention because of the offseason tension surrounding Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel. But Narduzzi insisted the handshake was warm, not hostile.
Speaking at his Monday news conference, Narduzzi said, "I thought we had a good handshake," he said.
He said he told Cristobal to go win the championship, and Cristobal replied with thanks. When asked if the exchange looked tense, Narduzzi said Cristobal may have been upset, but he didn’t know.

“I had a great handshake with him, and I told him to go win it all. He said, ‘Thanks Pat.’
And that was about it … Maybe he was mad. Whatever.
I don’t know.” #H2P pic.twitter.com/xsNLm56v1T

This wasn’t the first time Narduzzi has given nearly the same account. After Miami’s 38-7 win at Pitt on Nov. 29, 2025, he said he told Cristobal, "he's got a good football team, go win it."
The backdrop matters here. At ACC Kickoff in July, Narduzzi accused Miami of trying to pull Heintschel into the transfer portal before the January window closed.
He also said he had warned Duke coach Manny Diaz that Miami might target quarterback Darian Mensah. Heintschel stayed at Pitt, while Mensah later transferred from Duke to Miami.
Days before Saturday’s game, Narduzzi said he and Cristobal had barely spoken since media days and took aim at the regulatory setup around the transfer portal.

Miami Heads To UNC With One Injury Concern Still Lingering
Miamis injury picture remains a little messy heading into the trip to North Carolina, with six players already ruled out on the latest report. Wide receiver Joshua Moore and running back CharMar Brown are among the absences, while the Hurricanes will still be watching the status of a couple of notable pieces after freshman Milan Parris and veteran cornerback Xavier Lucas were not listed but continue to carry injury concerns.
That leaves a few moving parts for a game that already comes with some uncertainty on the other sideline, where UNC is dealing with its own defensive absences and questions. For Miami, the larger issue is less about the names already sidelined and more about whether the group it expects to have available can get through the week without another late setback. Notre Dame Could Be Miamis Biggest Unbeaten Test Yet
Miamis unbeaten start has put it in a small and sturdy national club as Halloween weekend arrives, alongside Utah and UCLA as the only remaining FBS teams still at 7-0. For the Hurricanes, the early success has come from a team that has looked sharp on both sides of the ball, enough to keep it in the conversation as the schedule tightens and the margin for error shrinks.
The next stretch will tell much more about how real that start is, and Notre Dame looms as the kind of test that can reshape the seasons tone in a hurry. Projections still leave room for a strong finish, even one that lands Miami at 11-1, but the upcoming path also brings the sort of opponent that can expose whether this unbeaten run is built to last. Shelton Henderson Now Has A Chance To Raise Miamis Ceiling
Shelton Hendersons decision to stay in college rather than test the NBA Draft has already given Miami something it could use as the season approaches: a proven piece with room to grow. The sophomore small forward was named one of 20 candidates on the Julius Erving Award Watch List, which recognizes the top small forward in Division I mens basketball, and it is another sign that his role could expand as the Hurricanes look to build upward.
For Miami, the appeal goes beyond the preseason recognition. Henderson is expected to increase his production this season, and if that happens, the Hurricanes could have a player who helps lift their overall ceiling while adding a little more national attention along the way. Fans will even get a say starting Oct. 30, when voting opens to help narrow the field for the award. [Read more 🡒]
