Mario Cristobal Aims to Sway Top RB Nigel Newkirk From Georgia

Miami battles against top contenders as Coach Cristobal aims to land a highly-ranked running back from Georgia's talent pool.

Nigel Newkirk: A Rising Star's College Choices Narrowed to Six

Nigel Newkirk, a standout running back from Gainesville High in Georgia, is making waves in the college football recruiting scene. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 195 pounds, Newkirk is already ranked as the No. 6 running back in the 2027 Rivals300, placing him at No. 89 overall and No. 10 in Georgia. With impressive stats and a promising future, he's now down to six potential college destinations.

Newkirk's shortlist includes powerhouse programs: LSU, USC, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, and Alabama. The Hurricanes have already had the chance to host him for a visit during their game against Stanford last fall, making a strong impression.

Interestingly, Newkirk's list has evolved since November when he initially narrowed his choices to Miami, Alabama, Michigan, FSU, and Georgia. The emergence of Ohio State and LSU on his list shows how these programs have made significant strides in capturing his interest.

During his junior year at Gainesville, Newkirk put up eye-popping numbers, rushing for 1,496 yards on 184 carries. That’s an average of 8.1 yards per carry, with 19 rushing touchdowns and 20 total scores. He also showcased his versatility with 128 receiving yards, totaling 1,624 yards for the season.

According to 247Sports, Newkirk holds an 89 rating, ranking him No. 20 among running backs and No. 26 in Georgia. The 247Sports Composite places him at No. 194 nationally, No. 11 at running back, and No. 22 in the state, underscoring his status as a top-tier recruit.

Newkirk's recruitment journey has seen him take unofficial visits to several schools, including Georgia Tech, Florida, Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama, where he’s visited twice. Florida State also hosted him multiple times, but it appears they haven't made the final cut.

Alabama seems to be leading the pack, but Miami's inclusion in his top six is a testament to their recruiting efforts. The absence of Florida State from this list indicates they couldn't maintain Newkirk's interest, possibly due to their on-field performance not meeting expectations.

As Newkirk continues to evaluate his options, the college football world will be watching closely. His decision will not only impact his future but could also shift the dynamics of college football recruiting.
