In a remarkable debut season, head coach Jai Lucas has taken the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team on a thrilling journey, transforming them from a struggling program into a formidable force. With a 26-9 record, a third seed in the ACC, and a spirited run to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32, Lucas has certainly made his mark.
Lucas, at just 37, faced a daunting task with a roster that had no returning players. Yet, he skillfully navigated the transfer portal, bringing in key players like seniors Tre Donaldson, Malik Reneau, and Ernest Udeh Jr., along with junior Tru Washington. Freshmen Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen also proved to be valuable additions, quickly adapting to the team’s fast-paced dynamics.
This impressive turnaround earned Lucas the prestigious Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year award, recognizing him as the top first-time head coach in Division I basketball. The Hurricanes' 19-win improvement from a 7-24 season tied an NCAA record, underscoring the magnitude of Lucas's achievement.
Lucas didn't just make waves nationally; he etched his name into the Hurricanes' history books. He matched the most regular-season wins with 24, achieved the second-most wins at the Watsco Center with 15, and became the fastest first-time ACC coach to reach 20 wins since 1997-98. He also guided Miami to its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance.
What makes this feat even more impressive is that Lucas did it without an NBA lottery prospect like those at rival programs. Instead, he brought in players like Reneau and Donaldson, who embraced larger roles and were recognized as All-ACC members.
As Lucas heads into his second season, he's poised to continue this upward trajectory. The team is set to welcome five-star forward and McDonald’s All-American Caleb Gaskins. While Dante Allen is returning for his sophomore year, Tru Washington and Noam Dovrat have entered the transfer portal, leaving some uncertainty about the rest of the roster.
Retaining Shelton Henderson, who averaged 13.8 points and showed remarkable efficiency, will be crucial for Lucas as he aims to build on this foundation. With the groundwork laid, the challenge now is to elevate the program even further, and Lucas appears ready to rise to the occasion.
