Former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Mark Pope was arrested in Florida on serious felony charges after police say he used a handgun during a violent confrontation with a woman in Miami-Dade County.
According to police reports, Pope met an acquaintance at a local park, and the two were inside her vehicle when an argument turned heated. Investigators allege Pope then pulled out a handgun, pistol-whipped the woman in the face and forcibly took her cellular phone. The victim got away, ran to a nearby gas station and called law enforcement from there.
Deputies later found Pope and booked him into a correctional facility. At his initial bond court appearance, a judge ordered him held without bond. The court also said he must wear a GPS ankle monitor if he is eventually released.
The 27-year-old wide receiver faces counts of armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery.
Pope came to the University of Miami in 2018 as a highly touted consensus four-star recruit and spent three seasons with his hometown Hurricanes before entering the transfer portal. His role grew over time.
As a freshman in 2018, he managed just 11 receiving yards. In 2019, he took a step forward with 18 catches for 266 yards.
His strongest season came in 2020, when he started multiple games and finished with 33 receptions for 403 yards and two touchdowns.
He also contributed on special teams as a punt and kickoff returner. Over his three seasons with Miami, Pope totaled 52 catches for 680 yards.
