Darian Mensah Is Turning Miamis QB Debate Into A Heisman Push

Deck: Miami Hurricanes' quarterback Darian Mensah is setting a new standard by outshining his decorated predecessors with record-breaking stats, positioning himself as a serious contender in the Heisman Trophy race.

Darian Mensah has wasted no time putting his own stamp on Miami’s offense, and the numbers are starting to jump off the page. Through seven games, the Hurricanes quarterback is not just keeping pace with the best seasons in school history - he’s outpacing them.

Mensah leads the nation in completion percentage at 81.4 percent and is on track to set the national record. He also sits first in the country with a 204.55 passer rating. Those marks put him ahead of the production Miami got from Cam Ward and Carson Beck, two quarterbacks who delivered huge seasons for the Hurricanes in back-to-back years.

Ward, a 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist and the 2025 NFL Draft first overall pick, completed 67.2 percent of his passes in 2024 and finished with a 172.2 passer rating. Beck, who guided Miami to the College Football Playoff Championship Game after the 2025 season, completed 72.4 percent of his passes and posted a 157.0 passer rating.

The comparisons have already made the rounds online. Miami fan Canes Chief posted side-by-side numbers on X showing Mensah alongside Beck, Ward, and LSU Heisman Trophy winners Joe Burrow in 2019 and Jayden Daniels in 2023. Mensah’s edge is clear in completion percentage, and he has thrown fewer interceptions than Burrow and Daniels through the first seven games.

The production has been steady and explosive. Mensah is averaging 307.3 passing yards per game and 10.5 yards per attempt, while piling up 22 touchdowns against just one interception. If Miami keeps rolling into another deep playoff run, he could put several of Ward’s 2024 single-season passing records in danger.

That kind of season has also pushed Mensah into the Heisman conversation. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is the consensus favorite in the odds, with Mensah right behind him and Miami receiver Malachi Toney third. Ohio State is also without starting quarterback Julian Sayin indefinitely, and what Smith does without Sayin will have a major effect on the race.

Mensah’s statistical pace is rare enough to put him in some elite company. Davey O'Brien of TCU in 1938, Charlie Ward of Florida State in 1993, Marcus Mariota of Oregon in 2014 and Daniels share the Heisman record for fewest interceptions by a winner with four. Mensah is on pace to challenge that mark, along with the national completion percentage record, if he keeps this run going and brings home the trophy.

Miami Escaped North Carolina But One Problem Just Got Harder To Ignore

Miami survived a Halloween scare in Chapel Hill, edging North Carolina 38-35 to snap a five-game skid in the series and pick up its first win there since 2017. The No. 1 Hurricanes needed plenty of offense to do it, with Darian Mensah throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns while completing 76% of his passes, and Malachi Toney adding seven catches for 75 yards and two scores.

Still, the bigger takeaway may have been on the other side of the ball, where Miami had to lean on a late defensive stand to finish the job. Marquise Lightfoot came up with two sacks and a forced fumble in the closing stretch, a reminder that even in a win, the Hurricanes are still searching for more consistent answers when games tighten up late. Miami Escaped North Carolina But One Problem Should Worry Hurricanes Fans

Miami left Chapel Hill with a 38-35 win, but it was the kind of victory that still gives a fan base plenty to chew on afterward. Darian Mensah threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and Mark Fletcher, Jr. found the end zone both on the ground and through the air, giving the Hurricanes enough offense to survive a night when the game never felt fully under control.

Miamis late key plays were enough to close it out, yet the defensive issues that showed up against North Carolina are hard to ignore. The Hurricanes did enough to protect the win, but the way they had to do it will linger as the bigger concern, especially with tougher tests still ahead. [Read more 🡒]

Mark Fletcher Jr. Just Reached A Miami Milestone Few Ever Touch

Mark Fletcher Jr. keeps adding to a Miami rsum that already looked sturdy, and his latest score against North Carolina pushed him into a place few Hurricanes have ever reached. The senior running back found the end zone on a 31-yard receiving play, a fitting way to claim the programs all-time lead in total touchdowns and move past a standard that had been shared by Stephen McGuire and Edgerrin James.

For a player who has been a steady part of Miamis offense across four seasons, the milestone says as much about durability and consistency as it does about one big play. Fletcher has been one of the offenses most reliable pieces, and now his name sits alone atop a list that carries real weight in Hurricanes history, with the rest of his final season still offering chances to add to it.
