The top-ranked athlete in the 2027 class has surged into the spotlight after his huge showing in Christopher Columbus’ win over Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman. On a nationally televised stage, Sears delivered two touchdown catches and three interceptions, the kind of stat line that makes people stop talking and start recalculating. Andrew Ivins, 247Sports’ director of high school football scouting, said the performance only strengthens the case that Sears’ ceiling keeps climbing.

The Hurricanes’ 2027 group features more five-star commitments than any other team and a higher percentage of blue-chip players than anyone else. Sears has still managed to separate himself, though, because he is doing it against the best competition in high school football.
Bishop Gorman came in ranked No. 1 in the country, and Sears was the clear star on the field. That’s the part that makes his rise resonate beyond one big game. It’s not just that he can dominate - it’s that he can do it when the lights are brightest and the opponent is loaded.
Now Sears gets another chance to put that on display this week against St. Thomas Aquinas, the top-ranked team in Florida and another national power. The Raiders have college prospects spread across the roster, but the attention will again center on Sears and what he can do next.
Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong has already labeled Sears a “flag bearer” for Miami’s recruiting class, and that idea makes sense when you look at who else is watching. The Hurricanes have major 2028 targets like five-star wide receiver Brysen Wright and five-star edge rusher Asher Ghioto, both of whom could be paying close attention to Sears’ rise.
That’s how Miami has long done its best recruiting work: with a few players at the center of everything, giving current commits and future targets someone to rally around. Malachi Toney is one of those players, and several prospects in the 2027 class have already talked about how excited they are to share the field with him.
Sears was one of them, which is part of why he reclassified from the 2028 class. He wanted the chance to play with Toney.
